That distinction matters because airport ground handling combines repetitive towing work with crowded aprons, tight turnaround times and little tolerance for error. Electrification can remove exhaust emissions from the vehicle itself and reduce ground noise, while automation could make routine journeys more predictable. Brussels Airport has already used Stargate to explore electric ground equipment, hydrogen-powered cargo tractors and an autonomous staff shuttle. In 2024, DHL Express introduced 24 electric tractors, loaders and lifts at the airport after testing, showing that electrification is further along than full autonomy. The new tractor joins those strands by asking whether a vehicle can be both battery-powered and capable of navigating operational routes with limited human input.

There are, however, two legitimate readings of that ambition. Brussels Airport and its industrial partners emphasise safer, more efficient and more sustainable logistics, with automation assisting staff. The European Transport Workers’ Federation argues that autonomous transport policy must also account explicitly for employment, training and working conditions. It says highly automated systems will still require people to supervise vehicles, maintain equipment, manage charging and respond to failures. In a separate aviation-safety intervention, the federation stressed that frontline workers’ practical experience is indispensable to regulation.

That labour perspective does not make the pilot inherently threatening, particularly while an operator remains on board. It does mean that technical success alone would be insufficient grounds for expansion. Any later rollout would raise questions about consultation, retraining, responsibility during an incident and whether productivity gains improve working conditions or simply intensify them. The European Parliament has similarly called for meaningful human oversight and worker involvement when automated systems enter workplaces.
