Police detained two people during the initial search in Saint-Gilles but released no further details while the investigation continues, according to BX1. In Molenbeek, the Brussels-West police zone told BRUZZ

The two incidents followed three episodes involving gunfire in the Brussels-Midi police area between Friday night and Sunday morning. BX1 reported that shots struck a police station in Anderlecht, a man suffered a leg wound in Saint-Gilles and another bullet entered a Saint-Gilles home without injuring the resident. Investigators have not publicly established whether the weekend incidents and Monday’s shootings are connected or linked to drug trafficking.

The latest violence triggered a federal political response. The opposition Socialist Party requested a joint meeting of the Chamber’s Justice and Interior committees to question Justice Minister Annelies Verlinden and Interior Minister Bernard Quintin, BX1 reported. Saint-Gilles mayor Jean Spinette separately called for 80 additional federal judicial-police investigators, arguing that local policing alone cannot dismantle the financial, weapons and trafficking structures behind organised crime.

The broader figures explain the urgency. Federal police data reported by BRUZZ show 57 shootings across Brussels’ 19 municipalities between 1 January and 31 July 2026, leaving two people dead and 21 injured. Brussels recorded 101 shootings, eight deaths and 43 injuries during all of 2025. Authorities warn against treating every shooting as a drug-related settling of accounts: the motive in each new case requires evidence from the judicial investigation.

Residents face the immediate burden through injuries, stray bullets and repeated disruption in residential streets. The political challenge now is to preserve sang-froid while separating confirmed facts from assumptions and deciding how local prevention, federal investigations, justice capacity and action against illicit financial flows fit together. Brussels prosecutor Julien Moinil is expected to give a public update in the coming days; the identities of the attackers, their motives and any links among the recent incidents remain unknown.
