The reported police deployment indicates that prison staff sought outside support to restore order. La DH described the situation as tense, but its initial report did not establish how many prisoners took part, when the disturbance began or whether normal movement and activities had resumed across the institution. Belgium Pulse has therefore not attributed responsibility to any prisoner.

Haren is Belgium’s largest prison. The Federal Public Service Justice says the complex opened in 2022 with room for 1,035 prisoners and was designed as a prison village, with residents housed in smaller living units intended to encourage autonomy and reintegration. Monday’s reported violence occurred in the communal exercise yard, known in Belgian prison terminology as the préau.

The incident follows repeated warnings about safety and capacity pressures at Haren. In a parliamentary exchange in April 2026, Justice Minister Annelies Verlinden acknowledged national prison overcrowding while MP Julien Ribaudo, citing prison unions, said about 170 people at Haren were sleeping on floor mattresses. Those figures describe the wider operating environment; they do not establish what caused Monday’s fight.

Haren has also experienced previous serious assaults. BRUZZ reported in March, citing the Brussels public prosecutor, that three prison employees became unfit for work after a prisoner attacked them during an intervention. In August 2024, BX1 reported that prosecutors opened an attempted-murder investigation after one prisoner seriously wounded another during a dispute. These separate cases show a history of security incidents, but no evidence currently links them to Monday’s events.

The immediate concern is the condition of the three injured prisoners and whether the exercise-yard confrontation has affected safety, visits or daily activities. Further information is expected from the prison administration, police or prosecutor. Until an official statement is issued, the identities of those involved, the sequence of events and the prospect of a criminal investigation remain unknown.
