Russian missile and drone barrage kills at least 16 in Kyiv region

Fifteen deaths were recorded in the capital and one in the wider Kyiv region.

The Associated Press reported that the hours-long barrage damaged 30 apartment buildings across Kyiv, while a school, a kindergarten and a children’s hospital were among the civilian facilities affected. Kyiv’s city administration said the attack struck residential and non-residential buildings in three districts and that rescue teams worked at multiple sites where people were trapped.

The children’s hospital in the Solomianskyi district sustained broken windows and damage to technical rooms, the Kyiv health authorities said. No patients or staff members there were injured. City officials initially reported 13 deaths in Kyiv; subsequent reporting from the Associated Press put the toll at 15 in the capital and 16 across the region. The figures remain subject to official revision as investigators and hospitals complete their assessments.

Ukraine’s air force said Russia launched 168 drones and 44 missiles, according to Reuters. It reported intercepting 146 drones and 39 cruise missiles but none of the ballistic missiles used in the attack. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy linked the deaths to Ukraine’s shortage of air-defence interceptors and renewed his request for additional Western systems.

Russia’s Defence Ministry said its forces targeted an industrial site producing components for Ukrainian cruise missiles, according to the Associated Press. Ukrainian authorities, however, documented extensive damage to homes and public institutions. Independent investigators had not published a complete site-by-site assessment by Sunday.

The attack underscores the pressure that repeated long-range strikes place on Kyiv’s air defences and civilian services. Belgium enters the story through its continuing support for Ukraine: the Belgian Foreign Ministry says the country has pledged €4.488 billion since the full-scale invasion, including funding for air defence, healthcare, schools and reconstruction projects concentrated partly in Kyiv and its region.

Rescue work and damage assessments are continuing. The next points to watch are any revision of the casualty toll, identification of the weapons and impact sites, and decisions by Ukraine’s partners on further interceptor supplies.
