Russian attacks kill two and injure nine in Ukraine’s Sumy region

Updated 29 June 2026, 11:30 CEST — SUMY, Ukraine — Russian attacks killed two civilians and injured nine others across Ukraine’s northeastern Sumy region during the 24 hours to Sunday morning, the National Police of Ukraine reported.

According to the police account carried by Ukrinform and Caliber.Az, three women aged 57, 62 and 69 and a 48-year-old man were injured during shelling of the Seredyna-Buda community. The 69-year-old woman died while being taken to hospital.

A Russian drone killed a 77-year-old man in the Velyka Pysarivka community, the same police report said. In Khutir-Mykhailivskyi, a 65-year-old man was injured when a drone struck a vehicle.

Police said drone attacks in the Sumy community injured a 48-year-old woman, a 72-year-old man and a 78-year-old woman. Two other men sought medical treatment for wounds sustained in earlier attacks on 27 June: a 24-year-old hurt by a drone and a 59-year-old wounded in a guided-bomb strike near Vorozhba.

The casualty figures come from Ukrainian regional authorities and could not be independently verified from the affected communities. No Russian response addressing these specific incidents had been reported at the time of publication, and the precise weapons used in every strike remained unclear.

The attacks form part of sustained pressure on Sumy, a border region repeatedly exposed to drones, artillery and guided bombs. Ukrinform reported that another Russian drone attack on the city of Sumy on 27 June injured 13 people, including two children, and damaged homes and vehicles, citing Ukraine’s State Emergency Service.

For civilians, the immediate consequences are repeated air alerts, damaged transport and housing, and continuing danger on roads close to the border. The European Council said on 18 June that Russia had intensified missile and drone attacks against Ukrainian cities and called for faster European deliveries of air-defence systems and ammunition.

Belgium is involved indirectly through its membership of the EU, whose Ukraine policy and sanctions are coordinated in Brussels. The Council of the EU renewed the bloc’s sectoral economic sanctions against Russia on 25 June, extending them until 31 July 2027.

Emergency teams and investigators are documenting the latest damage. Further casualty revisions remain possible as residents seek treatment and officials inspect the affected communities.
