New Forest wildfire contained after motorists fled vehicles on A31

Firefighters have contained the wildfire that spread from a burning van on the A31 through England’s New Forest on Sunday, 9 August, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said on Saturday. Police ordered motorists out of their vehicles as flames reached the road near Bratley Wood; 23 drivers abandoned their cars, and no deaths or serious injuries were reported.

The emergency began at about 17:30 local time when the van caught fire on the main route across the national park, according to BBC reporting based on emergency-service updates. Video from the road showed motorists moving aside for fire engines before officers directed people away from the traffic queue. The fire then crossed into dry vegetation, ultimately affecting roughly one square kilometre of forest and heathland.

Crews worked for several days to build firebreaks and secure the perimeter. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said shifting winds and hot, dry conditions complicated the operation. By Saturday, the service described the fire as fully surrounded, although firefighters continued checking the burned ground for residual heat and possible flare-ups.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Roads Policing asked owners of vehicles left on the A31 to contact police using incident reference INC-20260809-2000. The closure caused substantial disruption because National Highways identifies the A31 as an important route between Bournemouth and the south coast that already experiences heavy summer traffic.

The incident unfolded during a wider period of extreme heat and wildfire activity across Europe. The Associated Press reported on Friday that several European countries were fighting simultaneous fires, placing additional focus on how quickly flames can move through drought-stressed vegetation and cut transport routes.

There is no confirmed direct impact on Belgium. Belgian residents travelling through southern England should nevertheless check current road information, follow instructions from British emergency services and avoid entering closed areas. The European emergency number 112 also works in the United Kingdom.

Investigators have identified the burning van as the immediate source of the New Forest blaze, but authorities have not published the mechanical cause of that vehicle fire. The next steps are continued monitoring of the fire ground, recovery of abandoned vehicles and assessment of damage to the protected landscape.
