Driver kills one and injures ten after hitting pedestrians in Caen

Updated 27 August 2026, 08:00 CEST — A driver deliberately struck pedestrians outside Caen railway station in Normandy at about 22:15 on Wednesday, 26 August, killing one person and injuring ten, according to Calvados prefect David Clavière. Police arrested a 26-year-old suspect later that night in Ouistreham, around 20 kilometres from Caen.

Clavière said seven of the injured were in an “absolute emergency”, the French classification for people requiring immediate medical care, while three were in a less serious condition. AFP reported that emergency workers and forensic officers attended the scene, which police closed while evidence was collected.

The collision followed an altercation near a bar, according to a police source cited by AFP. Investigators have not yet established what caused that confrontation or precisely what happened between it and the driver entering the vehicle. The prosecutor said authorities were not initially treating the incident as terrorism, while stressing that the investigation had only just begun. Clavière said the detained man was born in Russia, was not known to the intelligence services and had previously come to police attention only for road offences. Those details do not establish a motive.

Caen’s deputy mayor responsible for security, Bruno Coutanceau, told AFP that the injured appeared to be men aged between 17 and about 40. Officials had not publicly confirmed the identity of the person killed by the latest verified update.
