Can mediation settle the leadership disputes troubling Les Engagés in Jette and Brussels City?

Les Engagés has sent a mediator to address internal tensions involving its local leadership in Jette and at the City of Brussels, BX1 and La Dernière Heure reported on 13 August. The intervention follows allegations of authoritarian conduct around Jette mayor Claire Vandevivere and claims of toxic management within the party’s Brussels City operation. No independent investigation or formal finding establishing misconduct has been made public.

For people who live or work in Brussels, this is more than a party quarrel. Municipal executives oversee services that touch daily life, while their cabinets and administrations must remain workable places for public employees. The dispute also tests whether Les Engagés can resolve workplace and political complaints transparently while holding power at several levels. Jette is one of the capital region’s 19 municipalities; the City of Brussels is a separate municipality that includes the historic centre and European Quarter. Neither should be confused with the Brussels-Capital Region or the EU institutions based nearby.

According to BX1 and La Dernière Heure, the party chose mediation to lower the temperature and reopen dialogue rather than immediately impose a disciplinary outcome. The reporting describes dissatisfaction with Vandevivere’s leadership in Jette and separate concerns about management in the City of Brussels context. Because the publicly accessible reporting does not identify every complainant or publish the mediator’s mandate, the precise number of people involved and the incidents under examination remain unclear.

Vandevivere is not a marginal figure in the movement. Les Engagés identifies her as Jette’s mayor, responsible for security, general coordination, municipal administration, transparency and several other portfolios. The party’s own profile says she became mayor in 2022 after 15 years as an alderwoman. Her personal website says she took the oath for a new term on 29 November following the 2024 municipal election and that the new council and executive were installed on 1 December.

The City of Brussels strand concerns another political institution altogether. The city’s official website lists Didier Wauters as the alderman responsible for economic affairs, employment, commerce and municipal equipment. Municipal records show that the Les Engagés-CD&V group supports the city majority. That makes any sustained dysfunction politically consequential: it could affect a coalition partner’s credibility and the operation of a cabinet responsible for businesses, jobseekers and municipal facilities. The published allegations should nevertheless be treated as allegations, not as proven harassment or legal wrongdoing.

Two perspectives now compete. Those raising concerns appear to regard mediation as necessary recognition that ordinary internal channels have not restored trust. For them, the central issues are staff welfare, the ability to disagree without fear and the accountability of office-holders. The party leadership’s decision points to a different framing: mediation is a mechanism for dialogue and de-escalation, not a judgment against Vandevivere, Wauters or anyone else. Neither BX1 nor La Dernière Heure reported a concluded disciplinary procedure.

The broader lesson is about the unusually personal scale of Belgian municipal power. A mayor or alderman combines political authority, coalition management and close contact with an administration. That proximity can produce responsive government, but it can also make disputes intensely personal and leave colleagues or staff uncertain about where political direction ends and workplace management begins. Earlier disagreements between Brussels-based Les Engagés mayors and their national party—BRUZZ documented their 2024 protest over a proposed police-zone merger—also show that local office-holders retain substantial autonomy.

The mediator’s credibility will depend on a clear mandate, confidential access to the people concerned and an outcome that distinguishes political disagreement from possible workplace harm. The next questions are whether the process covers both disputes, whether staff representatives will participate, whether recommendations will be published and whether either municipal authority launches its own workplace procedure. Until those points are answered, mediation confirms that Les Engagés considers the tensions serious enough to intervene, but not who is responsible for them.
