Can Leuven’s smart sewer traps control rats without poison?

Leuven therefore presents the traps as one part of pest management, alongside cleaner streets and responsible disposal of food waste—not as a technological cure by itself.
The devices, supplied and monitored by pest-control company Anticimex, sit at the entrance to sewer pipes. According to the company, sensors detect a rat’s movement and body heat before blunt bolts strike the animal; the mechanism then resets automatically. Each activation is logged in a digital platform, allowing operators to identify hotspots, monitor activity and move traps when a location is no longer productive. Anticimex says the equipment does not obstruct the normal flow of wastewater.
Leuven public-works councillor Dirk Vansina, of CD&V, said the data would let the city see both where rats are present and how the population develops, enabling it to place traps where they have the greatest effect. The city’s announcement describes the method as more targeted, environmentally friendly and humane than poison bait because death is intended to be immediate. Anticimex is responsible for installation, maintenance, monitoring and analysis, while the municipality identifies priority areas and evaluates the programme.
That claim requires some caution. The publicly available announcements do not disclose the contract price, the pilot’s full methodology or a verified count of rats killed. Het Nieuwsblad reported that six devices registered more than 100 strikes during the preceding month, but an activation is not necessarily the same thing as an independently confirmed carcass. Nor has Leuven published comparative evidence showing how the system affects the total rat population over time.
The wider European context explains why poison-free control is attractive. Anticoagulant rodenticides kill by disrupting blood clotting and are treated under EU biocides rules as substances of particular concern because of risks to people, animals and the environment. A 2024 assessment found that qualifying mechanical traps can pose a significantly lower overall risk, although effectiveness and animal-welfare outcomes depend on the trap design and conditions of use. The assessment also noted that risks to non-target animals can occur with both chemical and non-chemical methods.
That produces two distinct perspectives. Leuven and Anticimex emphasise rapid killing, precise deployment and live operational data. EU regulators take a more conditional view: non-chemical methods should be favoured where they work, but sewer-rat control still needs demonstrated effectiveness, safeguards and professional management. The European Chemicals Agency’s scientific committee continued in 2025 to support several anticoagulant substances for specified uses while recommending restrictions where safer alternatives are adequate.
