Brussels firefighter dies after Treurenberg gas explosion

Updated 17 August 2026 — A Brussels firefighter died and three colleagues were injured after an explosion during an emergency operation at a building on Treurenberg in central Brussels on Friday, 14 August, according to Le Soir and BRUZZ. The blast followed a gas leak reportedly caused when a contractor drilled into a gas pipe inside the building.

BRUZZ reported that the building was evacuated after the pipe was struck. Firefighters responded to secure the site, near Brussels Cathedral and the federal parliamentary quarter, before an explosion occurred. Le Soir subsequently reported that the Brussels fire service was mourning a colleague. The authorities had not publicly identified the deceased firefighter in the reporting available by Monday.

Three other firefighters were injured, BRUZZ reported. Their conditions and the nature of their injuries had not been officially detailed. No confirmed civilian casualties were reported, and the available accounts did not establish how many occupants had been evacuated before the blast.

The central question is how gas released from the damaged pipe accumulated and ignited after emergency crews reached the site. It also remained unclear whether the contractor knew the pipe’s precise location, when the gas supply was isolated and what safety information responders received before entering the danger zone.

The incident occurred in a dense administrative district where offices, homes and public institutions stand close together. The City of Brussels had separately announced resurfacing work around Treurenberg, Rue du Gentilhomme and Rue de Louvain in July, but no authority had established a connection between that municipal project and Friday’s explosion.

The death is a severe loss for the Brussels Fire Brigade, which provides firefighting and emergency medical assistance across all 19 municipalities of the capital region. The service says it carries out more than 15,000 firefighting interventions and more than 90,000 ambulance missions annually.

Investigators are expected to examine the building plans, the drilling work, the damaged installation and the sequence of communications between the contractor, the gas-network operator and emergency services. Until those findings are released, responsibility for the explosion remains undetermined.
