Nepal and Tibet flood death toll reaches 1,400, with 5,845 still missing

There was a limited return home on the Tibetan side. EFE reported on Tuesday, citing China’s Xinhua agency, that residents of Guoba village were leaving temporary accommodation after authorities inspected roads and homes. Officials said a lake formed by the disaster had drained and the river had recovered its normal flow, allowing residents to return safely. That assessment concerned the affected villages, rather than the entire disaster zone. The catastrophe began on 26 August when a huge collapse of ice and rock in Nepal unleashed water, mud and debris across the border area, EFE reported.
