Brussels Light Festival — Bright Brussels

Brussels’ winter centre turns into a walkable after-dark gallery, with light works washing over the Mont des Arts, Place Royale and La Monnaie. It is free, outdoors and easy to dip into for an hour or stretch into a full evening route.

When
13 February 2026 → 15 February 2026
Where
Brussels centre · Mont des Arts to Grand-Place
City
Brussels
Price
Free

What to expect

  • More than 20 light installations across the historic centre
  • Evening route from Brussels Park toward the Royal Theatre of La Monnaie
  • Projection mapping around the Mont des Arts carillon
  • Bright Brussels Kids, Bright Brussels Market and Bright Brussels Café stops
  • Free access, with installations lit roughly 18:30-23:00

Insider tips

  • Check the official map before setting off; the route shifts by edition and crowd flows matter.
  • Start near Brussels Park or Mont des Arts before dinner, then finish around Grand-Place/La Monnaie.
  • Use metro, tram or train into the centre; road closures and heavy foot traffic are likely.
  • Wrap up warmly: the best parts are outdoors and February evenings can feel damp.

Cultural context

Bright Brussels is Visit Brussels’ annual light festival and a relatively young winter ritual for the capital: LUCI traces the first edition to 2013 along the canal between Sainctlette Square and Armateurs Square. The 2026 edition marked the festival’s 10th edition, using contemporary light art to pull residents and visitors through Brussels’ heritage spaces after dark. Its purpose is part cultural showcase, part urban rediscovery: familiar civic landmarks such as Brussels Park, Mont des Arts, Place Royale and La Monnaie become temporary canvases for Belgian and international artists, with side programmes for families, food and design lovers.

Best for

  • ·Brussels residents wanting a free winter evening in the centre
  • ·families with children who can handle an outdoor night walk
  • ·couples looking for a low-cost Valentine-weekend stroll
  • ·students and young workers planning an easy group meetup after 18:30
  • ·visitors to Brussels who want Grand-Place and Mont des Arts after dark

Carnaval de Malmedy — Le Cwarmê

For four winter days, Malmedy turns carnival into street theatre: wooden masks, Walloon songs, drums and strange local figures moving through the old town until Mardi Gras night.

When
13 February 2026 → 17 February 2026
Where
Malmedy · Place de Rome, 4960 Malmedy
City
Malmedy
Price
Free

What to expect

  • Sunday’s big procession with Malmedy’s traditional masked figures and carnival societies
  • Walloon-language songs, jokes and shouted exchanges in the streets
  • Monday mobile-stage satire, with local news and characters teased in public
  • Tuesday mâssis toûrs, then the burning of the Haguète on Place Albert 1er
  • Free outdoor festivities across central Malmedy

Insider tips

  • Aim for Sunday if you can only do one day; it is the most visual part of Le Cwarmê.
  • Dress for a long February outdoor event: warm layers, waterproof shoes and hands free for photos.
  • Stay into Tuesday evening for the final Haguète burning, but check return transport before you commit.
  • Families may prefer the Sunday daytime procession over the later tavern-to-tavern atmosphere.

Cultural context

Le Cwarmê is Malmedy’s own carnival season, rooted in Walloon-speaking local life and documented as far back as an archive reference dated 25 June 1459. The 2026 edition runs over the Mardi Gras period, with the main public days listed from 14 to 17 February. Its identity comes from masks and roles found in Malmedy rather than generic carnival costumes: figures such as the Haguète, Longs-Nés and Trouv’lê carry gestures, objects and dialect phrases locals recognise. The tradition is promoted by Malmedy Tourisme and the Royal Syndicat d’Initiative de Malmedy, and is listed as intangible heritage by the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles.

Best for

  • ·families in Wallonia wanting a living folklore day trip
  • ·Brussels and Liège residents comparing Belgium’s carnival traditions
  • ·seniors who enjoy processions, masks and regional heritage
  • ·photographers looking for winter street theatre in the Ardennes
  • ·French-speaking newcomers curious about Walloon dialect culture

Museum Night Fever — Brussels

A single wristband turns Brussels into a late-night museum crawl: galleries glowing after hours, DJs in unlikely halls, performers beside permanent collections and shuttle buses threading the city until 01:00.

When
07 March 2026
Where
30+ Brussels museums · Brussels city-wide
City
Brussels
Price
€18 single ticket

What to expect

  • More than 30 museums open from evening until 01:00
  • DJ sets, live performance, installations, films and guided encounters
  • Museum-to-museum shuttles included with the event pass
  • Crowds moving between central museums, Cinquantenaire and outlying venues

Insider tips

  • Start with one outer museum, then work back toward the centre as queues build early downtown.
  • Check the date before booking: official 2026 pages currently list 17 October, not 7 March.
  • Use the shuttles for museum-hopping; the pass does not cover regular STIB-MIVB lines.
  • Afterparty venues can sell out fast, especially C12 and Botanique.

Cultural context

Museum Night Fever is run by Brussels Museums asbl, the federation linking more than 125 museums in the capital. The event grew from the European idea of opening cultural institutions after dark, but Brussels gives it a younger, clubbier edge: emerging artists are paired with collections, and the museum visit becomes part performance route, part city night out. The 2025 edition followed the event’s 18-year history; official Brussels listings now place the 2026 edition on 17 October. Its role in Belgian life is clear: it lowers the threshold for people who rarely visit museums and makes the capital’s multilingual cultural network feel shared.

Best for

  • ·Brussels residents who want a cultural night out without choosing just one museum
  • ·students and young professionals looking for art, DJs and city-hopping
  • ·couples who prefer a moving evening over a seated show
  • ·teenagers and families with older kids comfortable with late hours

DocVille — Leuven documentary festival

For nine March days, Leuven becomes a documentary rabbit hole: big-screen investigations, intimate portraits, Q&As and late discussions spilling out around Cinema ZED. It is the indoor festival for people who like leaving a film with three new arguments and one changed opinion.

When
20 March 2026 → 29 March 2026
Where
Cinema ZED Leuven · Naamsestraat 96, 3000 Leuven
City
Leuven
Price
€9.50 per film · €60 pass

What to expect

  • A dense programme of Belgian and international documentaries across Leuven cinema rooms
  • Post-screening Q&As, debates, master talks and occasional workshops
  • Festival hub energy around Cinema ZED, with audiences comparing notes between screenings
  • A mix of social issues, science, politics, art, personal stories and cinematic non-fiction
  • Paid per-film tickets, with pass options for people planning several screenings

Insider tips

  • Check the full timetable before buying: the strongest day is often the one where two screenings pair well back-to-back.
  • Leave buffer time after Q&A screenings; talks can run long and Leuven venues are close but not instant.
  • For popular Belgian premieres, book early rather than trying the door queue.
  • If you are new to DOCVILLE, start with a competition title plus one Belgian documentary.

Cultural context

DOCVILLE grew out of Leuven’s film-house culture and the work of Fonk vzw, the organisation behind Cinema ZED and Kortfilmfestival Leuven. Founded in 2005, it helped give documentary cinema a dedicated Belgian stage after years when the genre was often treated as television material rather than cinema. The festival now sits in late March as one of Flanders’ key non-fiction film moments, linked to Cinema ZED and partner venues across Leuven. Its place in Belgian cultural life is practical as well as artistic: it brings filmmakers, students, local audiences and policy-minded viewers into the same rooms for films that often continue as public conversation.

Best for

  • ·Leuven residents who want a serious cultural week without leaving the city
  • ·KU Leuven students looking for sharp evening cinema and filmmaker talks
  • ·documentary fans from Brussels or Antwerp planning a focused day trip
  • ·couples who prefer discussion-heavy cinema to a standard night out

Tour of Flanders — Ronde van Vlaanderen

Flanders’ biggest cycling day turns Oudenaarde into a wall of flags, beer cups and cowbells as the peloton comes off the cobbles and into the finish. You feel the race before you see it: helicopter thrum, crowd roar, then riders flashing past in seconds.

When
05 April 2026
Where
Centeotic Oudenaarde finish · Markt Oudenaarde, 9700 Oudenaarde
City
Oudenaarde
Price
Free to watch · paddock €40

What to expect

  • Free roadside viewing around Oudenaarde, with paid paddock access listed at €40
  • Men Elite and Women Elite races, plus big-screen tension as attacks go on the climbs
  • Cobbles, Flemish flags, team cars and cowbells in a dense finish-zone crowd
  • Bars and food stands around Markt Oudenaarde before and after the finish

Insider tips

  • Arrive by train if you can; road closures and parking pressure build early on race day.
  • For the loudest atmosphere, watch the final climbs on screen, then move toward the finish before the last kilometres.
  • Bring layers and waterproofs: early-April Flanders can swing from spring sun to cold rain fast.

Cultural context

First raced in 1913, the Ronde van Vlaanderen is one of cycling’s five Monuments and a core ritual of Flemish sporting life. The modern race is run by Flanders Classics, with Antwerp and Oudenaarde central to the current men’s route and the elite women also finishing in Oudenaarde. Its mythology is built on narrow roads, cobbled climbs such as Oude Kwaremont, and village crowds treating cycling as local heritage rather than a niche sport. On Sunday 5 April 2026, the race again made the Flemish Ardennes a national stage.

Best for

  • ·Belgian cycling fans who want Monument atmosphere without buying a ticket
  • ·families with older kids who can handle crowds, waiting and loud finish-zone noise
  • ·couples or groups making a spring Sunday trip to the Flemish Ardennes
  • ·international residents wanting to understand Flanders through its biggest bike race

Trolls & Légendes — Mons (April fantasy festival)

Step into Mons Expo for a full weekend of fantasy culture: costumed crowds, clangs from combat demos, folk-metal concerts, game tables, illustrators, book stalls and families moving between make-believe worlds under one roof.

Where

City
Mons
Price
€39 weekend · €23 day

What to expect

  • Cosplay and costume contests with plenty of photo moments in the halls
  • Fantasy crafts, illustrators, comics, books and role-playing game stands
  • Live concerts on festival evenings, with louder folk and metal energy after dark
  • Board games, card games and role-playing tables for groups who want to play, not just browse
  • Family-friendly animations alongside the enthusiast programme

Insider tips

  • Check the day-by-day programme before booking: Friday is usually more concert-focused than the daytime festival halls.
  • Use Mons station plus local transport or a short taxi ride if you want to avoid event parking pressure.
  • Bring cash for small craft stalls, even if larger stands take cards.
  • Costumes are welcome, but choose footwear for concrete floors and a lot of walking.

Cultural context

Trolls & Légendes began in Mons in 2005 and has grown into one of Belgium’s best-known fantasy gatherings. The non-profit ASBL behind it runs the main festival at Lotto Mons Expo and also organises summer activities in Mons, linking fans with authors, illustrators, musicians, game designers and craftspeople. Its place in Belgian cultural life is unusual: part book and comics fair, part music festival, part medieval-fantasy market, part family day out. The event’s Troll d'Or prize and recurring focus on Belgian and international creators help make Mons a meeting point for fantasy communities beyond Wallonia.

Best for

  • ·families with children under 12 who want an indoor fantasy day out in Wallonia
  • ·teenagers and students into cosplay, comics, manga and role-playing games
  • ·Belgian fantasy readers looking to meet illustrators, authors and publishers

Liège-Bastogne-Liège — the oldest cycling Monument

Wallonia turns into a one-day cycling theatre: cowbells on Ardennes climbs, team cars squeezing through villages, and a Liège finish after nearly 260 km of attrition.

Where
Place Saint-Lambert + Bastogne · Place Saint-Lambert, 4000 Liège
City
Liège
Price
Free roadside

What to expect

  • A 259.5 km hilly route from Liège through Bastogne and back to Liège
  • Roadside viewing is free, with the race caravan ahead of the peloton
  • Classic Ardennes climbs including Côte de La Redoute and Côte de La Roche-aux-Faucons
  • Fast finish-window planning: riders were scheduled into Liège around 16:02-16:39
  • Big crowds near Liège, Bastogne and the named climbs rather than a single stadium-style venue

Insider tips

  • For atmosphere, aim for Côte de La Redoute; for easier logistics with kids, choose Liège near the finish.
  • Arrive early on climbs: access roads close and the best roadside bends fill well before the peloton.
  • Use the official route map on the morning of the race; timings shift with weather and race speed.
  • Bring layers and food: Ardennes spring weather can change quickly, and rural viewing spots have limited services.

Cultural context

First run in 1892, Liège-Bastogne-Liège is one of road cycling’s Monuments and is deeply embedded in Walloon sporting life. Its nickname, La Doyenne, reflects its age and status: a spring classic where Belgian cycling memory, Ardennes geography and international pro racing meet on public roads. The modern race is run by A.S.O. and forms part of the UCI calendar, but its character remains local: villages, steep côtes, roadside bars, flags and families waiting hours for a few decisive seconds of racing.

Best for

  • ·Belgian cycling fans who want to see a Monument without buying a ticket
  • ·families with older kids who can handle a long outdoor roadside wait
  • ·Brussels and Liège workers planning a serious Sunday sports day trip

What to expect

  • Independent fashion, jewellery and design boutiques clustered along Rue Antoine Dansaert
  • One-day designer pop-ups mixed into regular shops
  • Free entry; spending is optional unless you buy from the designers
  • Cafes, aperitif spots and Sainte-Catherine restaurants within a short walk
  • An urban, window-shopping friendly route rather than a fenced festival site

Insider tips

  • Go mid-afternoon: you get the buzz before Saturday closing times start to bite.
  • Use Sainte-Catherine or Bourse as your metro/tram anchor, then walk the street end to end.
  • Check individual shop socials before leaving; pop-ups and party hours can vary by boutique.

Cultural context

Dansaert is Brussels’ downtown fashion and design corridor, centred on Rue Antoine Dansaert between the historic centre and Sainte-Catherine. The area’s reputation grew from the 1980s as independent fashion stores and Belgian designer labels made it an alternative to the luxury-shopping axis uptown. Downtown Dansaert, linked to VZW Quartier Dansaert ASBL, presents the neighbourhood as a merchants’ and residents’ quarter of boutiques, workshops, food addresses and cultural stops. A Saturday designer event fits that local identity: not a mass market, but a Brussels street where small shops use one day to spotlight makers, collections and encounters.

Best for

  • ·Brussels residents who follow Belgian fashion and independent design
  • ·couples looking for a free Saturday afternoon in central Brussels

  • Finish-area snacks from Delhaize, Be-Kind and HiPRO

Insider tips

  • Avoid driving between 09:00 and 16:30; many course streets are closed and parked cars can be towed.
  • Spectators get easy access around Mérode, Montgomery and Schuman, but follow STIB crowd-flow signs after the finish.
  • Use the free secure bike parking in Parc du Cinquantenaire, scheduled 08:00-17:00.

Cultural context

First run on 8 June 1980 with 4,659 starters, the 20 km de Bruxelles grew with Belgium’s jogging boom into one of the capital’s biggest shared sporting days. The 46th edition is scheduled for Sunday 31 May 2026 and is run by S.I. Brussels Promotion, with public partners including the City of Brussels, be.brussels and Adeps. Its route deliberately shows Brussels as a lived-in capital: EU quarter, grand avenues, Bois de la Cambre and Avenue de Tervuren. Two cathedrals of Belgian heritage in one weekend

On Trinity Sunday, Mons turns its Grand-Place into a packed folk arena: a gold reliquary carriage, bells, songs, horses and the noisy Lumeçon clash as Saint George faces the dragon in front of the city.

When

Where

City

Price
Free

What to expect

  • Car d'Or procession through central Mons from about 09:30
  • Crowds helping push the gold carriage up Rampe Sainte-Waudru around midday
  • Lumeçon battle on Grand-Place, with Saint George, the dragon, Chins-Chins and Diables
  • Free, dense street atmosphere around the historic centre; expect very limited space near the arena
  • UNESCO-listed Walloon folklore with religious, civic and theatrical elements in one morning

Insider tips

  • Arrive well before 09:30 if you want to see the Car d'Or procession from the front row.
  • For the Lumeçon, choose your spot early; Grand-Place fills fast and movement becomes difficult.
  • Use train or park outside the centre: streets around Grand-Place and Sainte-Waudru are heavily crowded.
  • Families may prefer watching the procession route rather than entering the tightest Lumeçon crowd.

Cultural context

The Ducasse de Mons, known locally as Doudou, is the ritual high point of Trinity weekend in Mons and has roots in the 14th century. It centres on Sainte-Waudru, patron saint of the city, whose reliquary is carried in the Car d'Or procession before the famous climb up Rampe Sainte-Waudru. The popular Lumeçon then shifts the mood from devotion to civic theatre, staging Saint George against the dragon on Grand-Place. Recognised by UNESCO in 2005 within the Processional Giants and Dragons of Belgium and France tradition, it remains a defining Walloon city ritual run around Mons' civic and heritage institutions.

Best for

  • ·Walloon folklore lovers wanting Belgium's most intense Trinity Sunday ritual
  • ·families with older children who can handle big crowds and loud street energy
  • ·couples planning a full cultural day trip by train to Mons
