Cultural context

Mechelen grew around the Dijle, the river that carried goods into a compact trading city between Antwerp and Brussels. Haverwerf was once tied to grain unloading and Mechelen's historic staple rights, which forced grain boats to stop and sell locally before moving on. Today the same waterfront is one of the city's postcard corners, with sixteenth- and seventeenth-century houses beside the bridge.
