Earlier accounts said it was hidden beneath clothing in a sports bag, but the precise model, its origin and the suspect’s intended destination have not been officially detailed in the public prosecutor’s statements available so far.

The Brussels prosecutor opened a judicial investigation and requested an arrest warrant. Provisional detention is not a finding of guilt: it allows the investigation to proceed while a court periodically reviews whether continued custody is legally justified. The presumption of innocence therefore applies, and no charge should be treated as proved before judgment.

The most consequential question remains motive.
