Updated 4 September 2026, 16:00 CEST — An unidentified drone crossed from Romania into Bulgarian airspace on 8 August and exploded about 100 metres inside Bulgaria, roughly one kilometre from a compressor station on the Trans-Balkan Gas Pipeline, Prime Minister Rumen Radev said after a meeting of the Bulgarian Security Council. The Bulgarian government reported no casualties or damage to buildings or infrastructure.

Bulgarian interior and defence teams secured the site and began examining the wreckage, according to the government statement. Radev said the force of the explosion indicated that the aircraft was not a recreational drone, but authorities have not identified its model, operator, flight path or intended target. Bulgaria has not attributed the incident to Russia or Ukraine.

The aircraft was not detected by Bulgarian or Romanian systems or by NATO’s Combined Air Operations Centre in Torrejón, the Bulgarian government said. Radev ordered stronger surveillance along the Romanian border and additional protection for strategic sites. The government also linked the detection failure to delays in acquiring modern three-dimensional military radars.

The incident carries wider significance because Bulgaria and Romania are NATO members on the alliance’s Black Sea flank. NATO says repeated drone and aircraft incursions elsewhere on its eastern frontier have increased the risk of miscalculation and prompted stronger intelligence-sharing, surveillance and air-defence coordination. The explosion’s proximity to gas infrastructure adds an energy-security concern, although Bulgaria has reported no interruption to pipeline operations.

Separately, Russian attacks across Ukraine overnight into 4 September killed at least three people, according to local officials cited by the Associated Press. AP reported that one person died in the Odesa region and two police officers were killed in Dnipro, while a drone strike on a residential building in Kyiv injured three people. These casualties were not connected to the Bulgarian incident.

For Belgium, the relevance is indirect but concrete: Belgian forces and policymakers participate in NATO decisions on eastern-flank surveillance, while the federal government says its 2026 support package for Ukraine includes funding for air defence and drones. Investigators in Bulgaria must now establish what crossed the border and why three monitoring systems failed to detect it. Until the wreckage analysis is complete, the drone’s origin and whether the gas facility was an intended target remain unknown.
