The warning followed a vast Ukrainian barrage over Russia in mid-August that set fire to another Wildberries warehouse in the Moscow region and wounded civilians, according to Russian officials cited by the Associated Press.

The Russian Defence Ministry said its forces intercepted 791 drones across Russia, occupied Crimea and the Black and Azov seas overnight on 15–16 August. The Associated Press described it as the second-largest such attack since January 2025, while Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said more than 600 drones had approached the capital region and 180 were shot down. Those figures come from Russian authorities and cannot be independently verified. Officials reported three injuries around Moscow and three more in neighbouring Ryazan; no deaths or major structural damage were confirmed in the capital region.

For Belgium-based readers, the immediate significance is political rather than physical. Britain remains a NATO ally, while Belgium’s government under Prime Minister Bart De Wever has committed at least €1 billion in annual military aid to Ukraine during the current legislature. The Belgian Foreign Ministry says the 2026 package backed by Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot and Defence Minister Theo Francken includes contributions involving drones, air defence and the F-16 coalition. Any Russian attempt to turn the provenance of individual weapons into direct pressure on supplying countries therefore touches a policy Belgium also follows, even though Brussels has not been publicly accused over these attacks.

The latest Russian warning came after reports that drones manufactured by two British companies had struck targets inside Russia. President Vladimir Putin later declined to say whether Russia might attack British military facilities, calling the answer a military secret. British Prime Minister Andy Burnham answered that London would continue to support Ukraine “100%” and would not be a fair-weather friend. Neither the Belgian federal government nor the EU institutions appear to have issued a specific public response to Moscow’s warning at the time of publication.

The dispute turns on two competing descriptions of the same campaign. Kyiv argues that long-range strikes degrade the economic and logistical networks sustaining Russia’s invasion. It says Wildberries sells equipment and components used by Russian forces. Wildberries denies helping supply the military, while Moscow describes attacks on Russian territory and commercial facilities as terrorism. Civilian casualties and the uncertain status of warehouses holding both ordinary goods and alleged dual-use equipment make the legal and factual picture more complicated than either side’s messaging suggests.

The broader shift is nevertheless clear. Ukraine has developed an ability to place Russian refineries, airports and distribution networks under sustained pressure far beyond the front. Associated Press analysis of Russian Defence Ministry data counted more than 43,300 claimed drone interceptions during June, July and August 2026, compared with about 7,700 in the same months of 2025. The claims are not independently auditable, but repeated fires, airport closures and fuel disruption show that at least part of the campaign is penetrating Russian defences.

This is where the EU framing differs from a narrowly British-Russian confrontation. In June, the European Council reaffirmed Ukraine’s right to defend itself and called for faster European production and delivery of drones, missiles, ammunition and air-defence systems. It also insisted that military support and future security guarantees comply with international law. For officials in Brussels, Moscow’s warning is therefore both an escalation risk and a test of whether European support can remain coordinated under pressure.

What follows will depend on whether Russia translates its rhetoric into cyber operations, sabotage, diplomatic measures or direct military action, and whether London discloses more about the drones’ supply and permitted use. Investigators must also establish which aircraft reached the Wildberries site, what the warehouse contained and whether civilians were adequately protected. Until those facts are verified, claims about weapon origin, targeting and interception rates should be treated as attributed assertions rather than settled findings.
