River Cleanup and local partners are preparing a large public clean-up along the Meuse, Ourthe and Dérivation in Liège on Saturday 19 September, making the city part of the international World Cleanup Day campaign. The operation is confirmed for that date, although the published practical information is not yet fully consistent: an event listing says activities begin at 14:00, while Rotary Liège Cité Ardente advertises participation from 10:00 to 18:00 around Parc Astrid.

For people in Liège, this is first of all a hands-on local operation: residents, families, colleagues and community groups are being invited to remove discarded material from the banks of the waterways that shape the city. The public listing says waste will be collected beside the Meuse, the Ourthe and the Dérivation. Rotary Liège Cité Ardente, which is supporting the initiative, says River Cleanup will provide gloves, litter pickers and bags, and describes a small sustainability-themed festival at Parc Astrid.

The waterways are more than scenery. The Ourthe reaches the Meuse in the Liège urban area, while the Dérivation carries part of the river system through the city. The Walloon Public Service’s hydraulic-waterways directorate is responsible for maintaining the Meuse in Liège province, the Ourthe downstream from the Nisramont dam and their associated banks and infrastructure. That makes litter prevention a shared space between civic action and continuing public management, rather than a job volunteers can finish in an afternoon.

River Cleanup presents the civic case in deliberately mobilising terms. As relayed by Rotary Liège Cité Ardente, its approach is to “fermer le robinet de la nouvelle pollution plastique” — close the tap on new plastic pollution — while removing waste already present. That framing treats the clean-up as a gateway to changed habits and collective responsibility, with the Rotary club and organiser Patrick Detre among the named local stakeholders.

The European Commission approaches the same problem from the regulatory end. It says the ten single-use plastic products most commonly found on European beaches, together with fishing gear, account for 70% of EU marine litter. Its Single-Use Plastics Directive consequently combines product restrictions, labelling, collection targets and producer responsibility, including obligations connected to litter clean-up costs. In April 2026, the Commission reported that Belgium was among ten member states already above the directive’s 77% collection benchmark for single-use plastic bottles on the basis of 2022 data.

Those two perspectives are complementary but expose an important tension. Organisers emphasise visible participation and the immediate removal of rubbish; the EU framework shifts attention upstream, towards product design, collection systems and who pays. A successful afternoon may restore particular stretches of riverbank and recruit new volunteers, but it cannot by itself prevent packaging, cigarette filters or fragmented plastics from repeatedly entering the water system.

The Liège action also has a genuinely international logic without ceasing to be a Walloon story. The Meuse crosses France, Belgium and the Netherlands before reaching the North Sea, so litter entering the river does not remain a municipal problem. Earlier Meuse clean-up campaigns sought cooperation across that basin, with Walloon organisations including Be WaPP and river-contract groups participating in the broader effort.

This source-to-sea perspective now also appears in the European Commission’s Water Resilience Strategy, which calls on authorities to “restore and protect the water cycle from source to sea” while preventing pollution. Brussels in this context means the EU institutions setting common rules; operational responsibility in Liège remains with Walloon and municipal actors, waterway managers, waste services and participating associations.

The next test is practical. Organisers still need to consolidate the meeting time, exact collection sectors, registration arrangements and any safety restrictions near the water. They have not yet published a target for participation or the volume expected to be recovered. After 19 September, the most useful measure will not simply be kilograms collected, but whether the waste is categorised, recurring hotspots are identified and the findings inform prevention and enforcement. Until then, prospective volunteers should consult the organiser’s event page for the final instructions rather than relying on conflicting third-party schedules.
