Young volunteers from Jeugdhuis De Nok will bring the free Nokout festival back to central Vosselaar on Saturday, 5 September, restoring a locally organised fixture that disappeared after 2017. The confirmed programme runs from noon until 3am across the Cingelplein, the youth centre’s courtyard and its indoor rooms, with live bands followed by several strands of DJ programming.
For people in Vosselaar and the wider Antwerp Kempen, the immediate significance is simple: a group of young residents has rebuilt a full-day cultural event without charging admission. That makes Nokout both an accessible night out and a test of whether a volunteer-led festival can regain a durable place in the municipality’s calendar. The organisers’ published timetable lists Fanfare Crescendo as the noon opener, followed by Unpredictable Youth, Vloeibaar Goud, G.U.S.T., Vuil Talloor, The Yummy Mouths and Lebowski on the main stage.
The musical spread is deliberately broad. The official line-up moves between garage and post-punk, hip-hop and beatbox, noise rock, indie rock and power pop, while Sneeze, F. Kapone and Fragmented provide afternoon and evening DJ sets in the courtyard. Nok Oud, Lace, DJ Celis and DJ Dirk then carry the programme indoors until 3am. In other words, the promise of live music and DJs across different genres is built into the layout rather than confined to one stage.
Nokout last ran annually before ending after its eleventh edition in 2017, according to Het Nieuwsblad. Its return is therefore less a routine relaunch than a transfer between generations of volunteers. Senne Lauwers of De Nok told the newspaper that the festival is sustained by young people and community volunteers, framing it as evidence that local youth can take responsibility for keeping their municipality lively. Fellow organiser Cis Woestenborghs described the Cingelplein as the heart of Vosselaar: the square sits beside both the church and the youth centre, allowing the programme to move naturally between an outdoor village gathering and a late-night indoor event.
That civic framing matters more than any attempt to dress Nokout up as an international festival story. Flemish youth houses belong to a wider tradition of open youth work in which young people create and manage activities for their peers. De Ambrassade, the Flemish youth-work knowledge centre, says that 437 of the 534 youth houses counted in a 2014 study operated entirely through volunteers. Those figures are dated and should not be treated as a current census, but they help explain the model behind De Nok: programming music is also a practical exercise in organising, budgeting and community participation.
Vosselaar’s municipal administration provides the other side of that arrangement. The council has published a temporary traffic order for the town centre covering 5 and 6 September, confirming that the revival affects public space as well as the youth-house site. The municipality also lists Nokout in its official local-news and festivities calendar. This is not evidence that the council is producing the event; it shows the local authority handling the access and mobility conditions around an initiative led by Jeugdhuis De Nok.
Keeping admission free does not remove the cost of staging a festival. De Nok is offering a €10 support card linked to discounts or benefits from local partners including Frituur ’t Smulbekske, De Goede Aarde and Bloemen Sas. The mechanism connects voluntary contributions to nearby businesses while preserving free entry, although the organisers have not publicly disclosed their budget, expected attendance or the financing balance between bar income, sponsorship and other support.
The practical questions now concern execution: weather, crowd management, traffic changes and whether the published timetable remains intact. The organisers’ regulations allow the programme or site to change for safety, organisational or weather-related reasons. After Saturday, the more consequential question will be whether volunteers regard the revival as sustainable enough to make Nokout annual again. No future edition has yet been confirmed.
Impact
