Zurich and El Gouna film festivals launch a cross-regional partnership

Film festivals do more than provide red carpets and premieres. For independent films, they can supply an initial audience, critical attention, sales conversations and introductions to distributors. Smaller or younger festivals also use partnerships to share expertise and extend their reach without attempting to reproduce the scale of Cannes, Venice or Berlin.

The European Commission treats such cooperation as an established cultural-policy tool. Its Creative Europe MEDIA audience programme supports networks of audiovisual festivals that pool resources and expertise, improve the circulation of films outside their home territories and reach new audiences. ZFF and El Gouna have not said that their agreement receives EU funding, so the Commission’s programme is context rather than a financing claim. It nevertheless shows why festival-to-festival alliances have become structurally important in a fragmented audiovisual market.

The choice of “Dolphins: My Close Encounters” gives the partnership a readily accessible opening subject, but verified public information about the film remains limited. The title points to a personal encounter with marine life; fuller production credits, running time, rights information, screening format and distribution plans should be checked against the festivals’ eventual catalogues. It would be premature to infer the film’s environmental argument or critical position from its title alone.

The Belgian relevance is secondary but genuine. Brussels and Belgium have multilingual, internationally oriented film audiences, as well as programmers and producers accustomed to moving between European festivals. A stronger bridge between Zurich and El Gouna may eventually give Arab films additional European exposure or offer European works another route towards Egyptian and regional audiences. No Belgian screening, distributor or co-production has yet been announced as part of this agreement.

There is no special Belgian commune or gemeente procedure for attending either festival. Travel documents, entry conditions and insurance remain the traveller’s responsibility. Residents should consult diplomatie.belgium.be rather than relying on festival publicity or old social-media posts. The Belgian travel advice updated on 2 July 2026 said there were no particular security problems in the Red Sea resorts of Hurghada, El Gouna and Marsa Alam beyond normal precautions against petty crime, while advising against driving at night. Conditions can change, and the advice is non-binding.

Language also deserves attention before booking. El Gouna operates in an Arabic- and English-speaking environment, while Zurich serves German-speaking Switzerland and an international industry audience. Viewers who require English, French or Dutch subtitles should confirm the language specification for the individual screening. Festival catalogues normally identify original language and subtitle availability, but the partnership announcement itself does not guarantee a particular version.

The agreement will become easier to assess once the partners explain whether it covers reciprocal screenings, talent exchanges, industry panels, sponsorship, training or shared audience-development work. It is also not yet clear whether “Dolphins: My Close Encounters” will receive linked presentations at both festivals, whether additional films have been selected, or whether the relationship extends beyond the 2026 editions.

For the festivals, the opportunity is to build a durable corridor between distinct film cultures. For filmmakers, the test is whether that corridor produces concrete access to audiences, finance and professional networks. For viewers, the immediate next step is less dramatic: monitor the official programmes, verify subtitles and ticket conditions, and use the Belgian federal travel portal before making an Egypt booking.
