What should residents do after the violent robbery of Clash owner Frédérique Drappier?

Immediate safety comes before recovering property or obtaining a clear image of a suspect. Anyone who has been struck, strangled or rendered unconscious should seek prompt medical assessment even if they initially feel able to continue; contemporaneous medical documentation can also become important evidence.

Once safe, avoid altering the scene more than necessary. Preserve the original surveillance recording rather than circulating only an edited social-media clip, note the precise time, and give police descriptions of people, vehicles and travel direction without presenting guesses as fact. Write down missing serial numbers and notify banks or platform providers if cards, phones or connected devices were taken. If keys disappeared, changing locks and disabling affected vehicle or digital access is a sensible precaution. A criminal complaint does not by itself secure compensation. The Federal Public Service Justice explains that a victim seeking damages may need to become a civil party in the criminal proceedings or bring a civil claim. Recoverable harm can include material, physical, psychological and moral damage, subject to the evidence and the applicable procedure. Legal first-line assistance is available, while income-tested second-line assistance may cover some or all of a lawyer’s costs.

The recordings in this case may assist investigators, but cameras are only one layer of protection and did not prevent the physical attack. Wemmel residents can request a free, non-commercial home assessment from the theft-prevention advisers of Politiezone AMOW, which covers Asse, Merchtem, Opwijk and Wemmel. The municipality says advisers inspect doors, windows, gates and other weak points and may recommend proportionate improvements.

Wemmel also advertises a municipal prevention grant covering 75% of eligible purchase or installation costs, up to €750 per dwelling. Conditions matter: an AMOW adviser must inspect the property before work begins, a follow-up inspection is required, and the detailed invoice must reach Wemmel’s Dienst Integrale Veiligheid within one year of the advice. Residents should check the current rules with the gemeente before ordering equipment, because grants and administrative conditions can change.

For newcomers, the institutional geography can be confusing. Wemmel lies in the Dutch-speaking Flemish Region but is a municipality with language facilities. Municipal administration is organised in Dutch, while individual contacts may take place in French when a resident requests it under the facilities regime. English is not an official administrative language, so an English-speaking victim who cannot follow a statement should tell the police immediately and ask what language assistance is available before signing anything.

Two perspectives should remain separate as the case develops. Drappier’s description and the apparent waiting captured on his cameras support his belief that this was a prepared operation. Prosecutors, however, have confirmed only the assault, theft, footage and continuing search; they have not publicly endorsed a motive or classification beyond the reported robbery. Publishing unverified descriptions or trying to identify masked people online could misdirect attention and interfere with a fair investigation.

The next substantive development should come from the Halle-Vilvoorde prosecutor or police if suspects are identified, property is recovered or investigators seek public assistance. Until then, the useful response is measured rather than alarmist: report suspicious behaviour, preserve evidence, review access and key security, and use Belgium’s victim-support system when the shock or administrative burden persists.
