Violent storm destroys part of Bullange home and damages villages across eastern Liège

Updated 23 August 2026, 16:00 CEST — Violent winds tore through Bullange and surrounding parts of eastern Liège province at about 18:30 on Wednesday, 19 August, leaving one home partly destroyed and uninhabitable but causing no reported injuries. Bullange mayor Rainer Stoffels told RTBF that the resident was away when the building was hit and that municipal social services arranged temporary accommodation.

The home, on the road towards Saint-Vith, sustained severe structural damage after a utility pole fell during the storm, according to RTBF and the Luxembourg newspaper Virgule. Both outlets reported fallen trees and damaged roofs elsewhere in the Belgian Eifel, including around Ligneuville, Waimes and Amblève. Some roads were temporarily obstructed while municipal crews removed debris.

Jörg Heinen, Bullange’s fire chief, told RTBF that firefighters handled 21 calls in two hours, most involving trees brought down across public roads. The first alert reached the service at 18:11, Heinen said. Emergency resources were already stretched because crews had been supporting operations against the wildfire in the nearby High Fens, RTBF reported.

The precise nature and strength of the wind remain under examination. Local officials described the event as a small tornado, but RTBF weather specialist Nicolas-Xavier Ladouce said a very active cold front, strong temperature contrasts and wind shear created conditions capable of producing rotating winds. He said a definitive assessment would require further analysis. The available evidence therefore supports describing a violent local wind phenomenon rather than treating a tornado classification as confirmed.

The episode illustrates the difficulty of forecasting damage from highly localised storms. Belgium’s Royal Meteorological Institute explains that its warnings cover broad hazardous-weather conditions, while the actual damage also depends on local factors such as terrain, vegetation and the vulnerability of buildings.

Residents whose property was affected now face damage assessments, emergency repairs and insurance procedures. Municipal teams and firefighters are expected to complete road clearance and safety inspections, while meteorologists examine observations and images from the storm. Authorities had not published a comprehensive damage total by the time of this update, and no official tornado classification had been issued.
