Two Belgian teenagers seriously injured in A50 crash near Uden

Two Belgian girls, aged 14 and 16, were seriously injured on Sunday, 9 August, when a car carrying seven members of one family left the A50 motorway near Uden in the Dutch province of North Brabant. VRT NWS reported that the vehicle overturned and came to rest in a roadside ditch at around 18:00.

All seven occupants were injured, according to reports carried by 7sur7 and Het Nieuwsblad. The two teenagers suffered serious injuries, while the other five family members were also hurt. Dutch regional reporting later established that a five-month-old baby and a two-year-old child were among the occupants, although the authorities have not publicly released a detailed account of each person’s condition.

The first emergency alert was issued at 17:43 near kilometre marker 121 on the A50, according to the regional P2000 emergency-dispatch record. Maashorst Nieuws reported that four ambulances, two fire-service vehicles and two trauma helicopters were sent to the scene. The seriously injured victims were taken to hospital by ambulance.

Maashorst Nieuws described the incident as a single-vehicle crash and said the car was found upside down in the ditch. Emergency work initially blocked traffic before the motorway was closed in the direction of Eindhoven, the outlet reported. No collision with another vehicle has been reported.

Dutch traffic-collision specialists began examining the scene after the rescue operation, according to Maashorst Nieuws. The cause remains unknown: the available police and media accounts do not establish whether speed, distraction, a mechanical problem, road conditions or a medical emergency played any role. No such explanation should be inferred while the investigation remains unresolved.

The accident has a direct Belgian dimension because every person in the vehicle belonged to the same Belgian family. The response and investigation nevertheless fall under Dutch jurisdiction because the crash occurred near Uden, around the A50 corridor linking the Eindhoven area with the north-east of the Netherlands.
