Too hot on the train to Antwerp? Can the SNCB app help you find air conditioning?

How to check before leaving
Enter the departure station and destination in the journey planner, select the intended departure and open its detailed train information. Look for the carriage diagram or train-composition section and the air-conditioning symbol. In Dutch the relevant terms are “treinsamenstelling” and “airco”; in French they are “composition du train” and “climatisation”. The operator is branded NMBS in Dutch and SNCB in French, but both names refer to the same federal railway company and the same bilingual app.
Check again shortly before departure. Composition data is operational information, not a reservation or promise: SNCB/NMBS may substitute another train because of maintenance, disruption or availability. An air-conditioning symbol means the assigned train type is equipped with cooling; it does not certify that every installation is functioning perfectly on that particular journey. Passengers should therefore treat the display as a useful planning signal rather than a comfort guarantee.
The app also shows expected crowding, delays and platform changes. On a very warm day, those details can be as important as the air-conditioning icon. A cooled but heavily occupied train may still feel uncomfortable, while waiting a long time for an alternative can create more heat exposure than taking the first available service. Travellers with limited flexibility should carry water and avoid relying on a later connection unless the app shows that it is running normally.
Why some Belgian trains remain hot
Belgium’s railway fleet is being renewed gradually, but older units remain in daily service. VRT NWS reported in August 2024 that roughly one quarter of passenger seats lacked air conditioning and that air-conditioned trains accounted for about 71.8% of services across the timetable at that time. SNCB/NMBS attributed the gap to the age of its fleet: cooling only became standard in rolling stock introduced from the mid-1990s onward. The company told VRT that it expected all passenger seats to have air conditioning by 2032 as new trains arrived and older units left service.
That timetable should be understood as a fleet objective, not a guarantee for every journey before 2032. Peak-hour P trains are a particular weak point because some use older equipment that spends much of the day parked outside. SNCB/NMBS says on its official hot-weather page that it may cancel certain P trains during extreme heat and replace older equipment where possible, partly to reduce the risk of overheated or defective trains disrupting an entire line.
The railway says it prioritises air-conditioned stock on heavily used routes during hot weather, particularly services towards the coast. That approach spreads limited equipment according to expected demand but cannot give every passenger the same level of comfort. Commuters and passenger advocates can reasonably argue that cooling is now a basic expectation, especially when sealed windows make a failed system particularly unpleasant. The operator’s countervailing concern is capacity: withdrawing every older train would reduce the number of seats and could leave remaining services more crowded.
What to do if the journey becomes unsafe

SNCB/NMBS advises passengers to carry water, watch for children, older people and others who may be vulnerable, and alert the train conductor or station staff immediately if somebody becomes unwell. The Federal Public Service Health advises people to drink more water than usual during hot periods, limit exertion during the hottest hours and seek cooler places. Antwerp’s city portal lists a drinking-water fountain inside Antwerpen-Centraal during opening hours, as well as fountains at Koningin Astridplein, De Coninckplein, Groenplaats and other public locations. Availability can change, so a filled bottle remains the safer plan.
If the app indicates air conditioning but the carriage is excessively hot, tell the conductor rather than opening windows or doors without instruction. Moving to another carriage may help because conditions can differ within a train, but passengers should follow staff directions and must never operate safety equipment merely to obtain ventilation. A routine comfort complaint can also be submitted to SNCB/NMBS customer service after the journey; record the date, scheduled departure, train number and carriage number if visible.
The broader lesson is that real-time passenger information is becoming part of the service itself. The app cannot cool a carriage, repair a defective installation or eliminate an ageing fleet, but it can turn an invisible difference between two departures into information passengers can use. Through future summers, passengers should watch whether the app’s composition data remains accurate during last-minute substitutions and whether fleet renewal reduces the number of uncooled journeys as promised.
