TechCrunch opens Disrupt 2026 side-event applications to independent hosts

A Belgian team should begin with a narrowly defined audience and an outcome that can be achieved in one sitting. “European technology networking” is too broad; a roundtable connecting Belgian health-tech founders with US hospital buyers, or a workshop on deploying multilingual AI under European rules, gives the selector and prospective guests a clearer reason to attend. The proposal should identify the format, intended participants, approximate capacity and what guests will leave knowing or having done.

Next comes the unglamorous part: ownership. Before applying, assign responsibility for a San Francisco venue, catering, insurance, accessibility, age checks where alcohol is involved, attendee data, cancellation terms and on-site staffing. TechCrunch explicitly places execution, costs, registrations, communications and legal issues with the host. Applicants should therefore treat possible TechCrunch promotion as additional reach, not as the foundation of their audience plan.

A realistic budget should include euro-dollar exchange risk, flights, accommodation, local transport, venue hire, audiovisual equipment, food, insurance and tax advice where necessary. No published acceptance criteria guarantee attendance or commercial results. A compact event with a carefully invited audience may be more defensible than an expensive reception built around an uncertain walk-in crowd.

The immediate next step is to submit the proposal by 4 September, while keeping contracts flexible until acceptance and timing are confirmed. After that, the important unknowns are which events TechCrunch will select, how prominently each will be promoted and whether organisers can convert conference-week visibility into relationships worth the considerable cost of hosting in San Francisco.
