P. Johnson joins a new tailoring wave beside Savile Row

Johnson opened a shop on Old Burlington Street beside Savile Row in early February 2026, Vogue reported on 19 February, giving the Sydney-founded business a permanent address near the traditional centre of British bespoke clothing. The company has not disclosed sales figures or the shop’s commercial performance.

Founded by Patrick Johnson and Thomas Bede Riley in 2009, P. Johnson presents custom tailoring with published price bands, production information and a deliberately informal retail experience. Vogue reported that its offering spans several service levels and extends beyond suits into womenswear and other wardrobe pieces. Its expansion places it among brands doing tailoring differently by combining traditional forms with lighter styling and less ceremonial service.

Vogue identified London labels Anglo-Italian and Speciale, New York’s J. Mueser and Stockholm-founded Saman Amel as related names in this field. They are separate businesses rather than a formal group, and their production methods and definitions of custom clothing differ. What connects the four bespoke brands highlighted around this trend is an effort to make classic jackets, trousers, shirts and knitwear feel usable outside conservative offices or formal occasions.

The distinction between bespoke, made-to-measure and made-to-order remains important. The Savile Row Bespoke Association says its members follow defined manufacturing standards and use a protected collective mark for qualifying garments. It also supports apprenticeships and represents more than a dozen tailoring businesses employing over 100 craftspeople. Those standards make clear that an approachable showroom or contemporary silhouette does not, by itself, determine whether a garment is technically bespoke.

Demand for skilled personalisation is rising as the workforce capable of delivering it contracts. The Associated Press reported in April 2026 that the United States had fewer than 17,000 employed tailors, custom sewers and dressmakers in the latest available estimate, down 30% over a decade. Retailers including Brooks Brothers were nevertheless expanding custom services, while training programmes sought new entrants to the trade.

Belgium enters the story through its established fashion culture and access to custom clothing, not through the London opening itself. Scabal’s Brussels shop offers made-to-measure garments and more than 5,000 fabrics, according to the Belgian-founded cloth merchant. Consumers should compare construction, fittings, alteration policies and delivery times rather than treating “bespoke” as a universal specification. The next test for P. Johnson and its peers is whether their more welcoming model can support skilled workshops and repeat customers as they expand.
