environmental officials reported improving conditions in the capital’s canal on Tuesday, 18 August, after overnight rain and lower temperatures reduced the algal activity that had turned parts of the water green and coincided with fish deaths. Michael Antoine, an engineer at Bruxelles Environnement, told BX1 that the latest daily tests were already better than those taken a day earlier and that readings which had raised fears of an emerging cyanobacterial bloom had fallen back.
The improvement matters immediately to residents along the canal, the Port of Brussels and the businesses and communities sharing this densely urban waterway. It is encouraging, but it is not an all-clear. The Regional Drought Unit maintained yellow vigilance across the Brussels-Capital Region on 18 August, saying recent rainfall remained insufficient to restore normal conditions after successive periods of heat and drought. According to BX1, about 10 litres of rain per square metre fell during the preceding night. Antoine said that rainfall and cooler conditions naturally restrained the biological process. Sylvain Godfroid, spokesperson for the Port of Brussels, explained the immediate mechanism: warmer water holds less oxygen, while limited rainfall means less renewal of the canal water. Heat, abundant sunlight and weak circulation can therefore combine to favour algae while leaving fish with too little dissolved oxygen.
The episode had become visible over the previous week. BX1 and BRUZZ reported green water, dead fish and significant pollution, while Bruxelles Environnement confirmed the presence of green algae. What has not been established publicly is a single, definitive cause for the outbreak or the total number and species of fish lost. Nor did the available results establish that a toxic cyanobacterial bloom had taken hold; the concern on 17 August was that one might be starting, before the indicators declined the next day.
That distinction is important. Green algae are visible organisms encouraged by light and nutrients, whereas cyanobacteria are bacteria capable, under some conditions, of producing toxins. Colour alone cannot establish toxicity. Daily measurements of oxygen, temperature and other water-quality indicators are therefore more informative than the canal’s appearance.
City to Ocean offers a more structural reading than the authorities’ weather-led explanation. Its founder, Pieter Elsen, told BX1 that fertilisers and organic matter stored in canal sediment could nourish algal growth. He also pointed to Brussels’ combined sewer system: during overflows, rainwater mixed with wastewater can enter the Senne and canal. Elsen explicitly stopped short of identifying the most recent overflow as the proven main cause, but argued that Brussels should keep more rainwater out of sewers through tanks, infiltration and disconnected downpipes.
The official regional picture supports concern about those longer-term pressures. Bruxelles Environnement says the canal’s overall physicochemical quality has improved markedly since the early 2000s, yet nitrogen remains problematic and abrupt discharges from sewer overflows can temporarily damage aquatic life. Its 2022-2027 Water Management Plan also identifies road traffic, domestic wastewater and atmospheric deposition among sources of persistent pollution entering the canal.
