How did Louis-Marie Piron go from struggling student to a Walloon business heavyweight?

Wallonia-based Thomas & Piron marked its 50th anniversary in 2026 while installing Olivier Beguin as chief executive, completing another stage in the handover from founder Louis-Marie Piron to a professionalised, second-generation leadership team. The group says Beguin took operational control on 5 January, working alongside executive chairman François Piron, the founder’s son. For Belgium, this is more than a polished anniversary story: one of Wallonia’s largest home-grown construction businesses is navigating succession just as housing production, affordability and energy renovation have become pressing regional concerns.

The origin story is striking. In 1974, at 18, Piron began renovating his grandparents’ house in Our, a village in the municipality of Paliseul, with local bricklayer Charles Thomas. They formally created Thomas & Piron two years later. Thomas & Piron now reports close to 3,000 employees and forecast 2025 revenue of about €920 million. Local broadcaster TV Lux cited revenue above €865 million when covering the anniversary in January and reported that diversification helped the business remain profitable through the construction downturn. Its activities now range from houses and apartments to renovation, property development and civil engineering. Recent projects include Charleroi’s Quais de Sambre transport redevelopment and the digital control-tower centre serving Walloon airports in Namur, according to the company.

Piron’s personal route helps explain the company’s place in Walloon business culture. The Walloon government’s biographical archive records that he trained in forestry rather than construction management and that his engineer brother Bernard joined in 1981, helping introduce more formal systems. The company became a public limited company in 1988, expanded from renovation into turnkey homes and later entered Luxembourg and other foreign markets. Trends-Tendances named Piron its French-speaking Manager of the Year in 2014; operational leadership subsequently passed to François Piron, although the founder remains a prominent public face.

There are two legitimate readings of the anniversary. Louis-Marie and François Piron describe patient reinvestment, family ownership and diversification as the foundations of resilience. Their argument is supported by the group’s survival across several property cycles and its ability to shift staff between activities. The public-policy perspective is less celebratory. Statbel’s provisional figures show that permits for new residential buildings in Wallonia fell 4.9% between March and April 2026, while the Walloon government says roughly 50,000 households are waiting for public housing and that the stock remains near 100,000 homes. A large builder’s success therefore coexists with inadequate housing supply.

That tension matters more than the familiar tale of a poor student proving his teachers wrong. Thomas & Piron’s next phase will depend on whether its scale can answer structural demand: affordable homes, faster public projects and renovation of energy-hungry buildings. Walloon Housing Minister Cécile Neven has framed the regional challenge around getting quality homes delivered more quickly and using public money efficiently. From October 2026, Wallonia’s revised renovation-support regime will prioritise the least efficient homes and rely mainly on zero-interest or preferential loans, creating opportunities for builders but also requiring households to finance substantial works.

Beguin must now preserve the agility praised by the Piron family while making governance less dependent on its founder. The immediate questions are whether the group reaches its revenue ambitions, expands renovation without losing affordability, and converts international diversification into stable earnings. Fifty years after Piron and Thomas began with a family house and basic equipment, the compelling story is no longer simply how Louis-Marie Piron passed from cancre to incontournable entrepreneur. It is whether the institution he built can outgrow the exceptional personality who started it.
