High Fens wildfire smoke spreads across southern Namur province

UPDATED 17 AUGUST 2026 — Emergency services identified the High Fens wildfire as the source of smoke and a burning smell reported across southern Namur province on Sunday, 16 August, La DH reported. The information available on Monday did not identify a separate major fire in the affected Namur municipalities.

Residents had noticed smoke or its smell in several parts of the province’s south, far from the burning nature reserve in eastern Belgium. La DH attributed the phenomenon to smoke transported from the High Fens. The precise municipalities affected, local particulate concentrations and duration of the episode were not fully documented in the published report.

The distinction matters for emergency calls: smoke carried over a long distance can create the impression that vegetation or a building is burning nearby. Residents who see flames, a concentrated plume or an immediate danger should still contact the emergency services rather than assume every observation comes from the High Fens.

The episode occurred during an extended period of exceptional fire risk in Wallonia. Namur Governor Denis Mathen had prolonged provincial drought restrictions after authorities assessed that dry vegetation, heat, wind and very dry air were increasing the danger of fires in natural areas. The City of Andenne said the latest extension remained applicable through 18 August, subject to further changes by the provincial authorities.

The High Fens are especially vulnerable when vegetation dries out. Wallonia’s environment administration explains that its red-flag system closes sensitive paths when conditions favour the rapid ignition and spread of fire. A regional prevention notice also records that the major High Fens fire of April 2011 burned about 1,200 hectares, showing that large fires and long suppression operations are not unprecedented on the plateau.

The broader European fire season provides additional context. The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre reported that the area burned across the EU in 2026 was already well above the long-term average by late July, while warning that satellite-based totals are revised as better imagery becomes available.

For southern Namur, the immediate issue is smoke exposure and the possibility of confused or duplicate alerts, not a confirmed new fire front. Authorities had not published local air-quality measurements or a timetable for the smell to clear at the time of this update. Residents should follow municipal and provincial instructions, keep away from any visible fire, and seek urgent help for breathing difficulty.
