Has Parfait Guiagon’s final week at Charleroi already begun?

Sporting Charleroi and Parfait Guiagon are preparing to end their three-year association, Le Soir reports, with the Ivory Coast international’s position changing over the course of a decisive week in Charleroi. No buying club, transfer fee or completion date has yet been announced, however, and Sporting still lists the 25-year-old attacker in its senior squad. The confirmed position is therefore narrower than a completed transfer: the hour of separation appears to have arrived, but the deal that would deliver it remains unknown.

For Charleroi supporters, this is not an ordinary squad adjustment. Guiagon has been one of the team’s principal sources of invention and goals, while his contract gives Sporting leverage in negotiations. Télésambre reported in January that the club had extended his agreement until 2028 after he produced nine goals and three assists in his first 20 appearances of the 2025-26 campaign. That extension protected a valuable Belgian asset; it did not necessarily commit either side to spending the full term together.

Guiagon’s story also reaches beyond Walloon football. Born in Côte d’Ivoire and developed at Africa Sports, he moved to Israel as a teenager before Charleroi recruited him from Maccabi Tel Aviv in August 2023. Sporting’s announcement at the time described a technically gifted attacking midfielder signed until 2026, initially with an additional-year option. FIFA’s official 2026 World Cup squad document subsequently listed him as an Ivory Coast player attached to Sporting Charleroi, underlining how the Mambourg became his platform for international recognition.

The Belgian reading of the situation differs from the familiar transfer-market shorthand of a player simply seeking a larger league. From Sporting’s perspective, Guiagon is both a sporting reference point and a saleable asset whose departure must make sense financially. From the player’s perspective, his growing international profile and productive Belgian seasons create a plausible moment to pursue a higher competitive level. Guiagon previously said, in remarks reproduced by Ladbrokes Belgium from La Nouvelle Gazette, that he wanted to leave Charleroi well and move to a level that would help him grow.

That ambition has coexisted with a more difficult relationship with part of the home support. Walfoot reported in April that some supporters whistled Guiagon after a victory and that the Storm Ultras publicly criticised his behaviour when he left without joining the post-match salute. The outlet described mutual incomprehension: the player expected greater recognition, while supporters interpreted several gestures as distance from the collective. That tension does not prove why a separation is now being pursued, but it helps explain why the ending feels more complicated than a routine profitable transfer.

The broader lesson is about Charleroi’s place in European football’s talent chain. Clubs outside the richest leagues must regularly balance immediate performance against the value created by recruiting, developing and selling internationally mobile players. Guiagon arrived from Israel, established himself in Belgium and reached the Ivorian national team. A successful sale would validate that model; losing his creativity without an adequate replacement would expose its sporting cost.

The next decisive step must come from Sporting, Guiagon or a buying club. Until an agreement is announced, supporters should distinguish a reported decision to part company from a completed transfer. The questions are now concrete: which market will move for him, whether Charleroi’s valuation can be met, and how quickly the club can replace a player who has carried a substantial share of its attacking responsibility. The separation may have sounded, but the final chapter has not yet been signed.
