Did Gorillaz deliver Rock Werchter’s ideal festival set?

The Indian elements were not a decorative interlude pasted onto a greatest-hits show. They reflected the broader musical direction of Gorillaz’s ninth-album era, parts of which were developed in Indian cities including Mumbai, New Delhi, Jaipur, Rishikesh and Varanasi, according to Time Out India. On the Werchter stage, acoustic Indian timbres sat beside hip-hop, dub, synth-pop and Albarn’s melancholy songwriting—the kind of collision on which Gorillaz has always depended.

That made the opening especially revealing. A festival audience normally rewards instant familiarity, yet Gorillaz began by asking listeners to enter a newer musical landscape. The subsequent run of recognisable songs then gave the set its popular momentum. In other words, the show presented cross-cultural collaboration as part of the band’s current identity rather than as an exotic flourish before returning to business as usual.

There is still room for caution in describing that synthesis. Reporting can identify instruments, performers and recording locations, but deciding whether the result amounts to meaningful exchange or carefully packaged global pop is ultimately an interpretation. The strongest evidence from Werchter is musical: the Indian performers were visible and audible at a key moment, while the rest of the concert continued the band’s longstanding practice of placing guests at the centre of its live sound.

Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett created Gorillaz around animated characters, but the live project has always depended on a changing human ensemble. Rock Werchter describes 2D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle and Russel Hobbs as the fictional group, with Albarn leading the musicians who realise the material on stage. That structure lets Gorillaz move between genres and generations without pretending to be a conventional four-piece band.

At Werchter, the format proved particularly suited to a festival. Visuals supplied continuity while singers, rappers and instrumentalists changed the energy from song to song. VRT NWS’s description of a “perfect festival set” was an assessment, not an objective outcome, but it captured the practical achievement: newer work received space without displacing the songs that a broad field expected to hear.

The reviews were not completely uniform in tone. De Standaard awarded four stars while drawing attention to Albarn’s apparently intoxicated state, and Het Nieuwsblad similarly described him as lightly inebriated. Dansende Beren, by contrast, emphasised that he appeared in good spirits and that the production recovered its authority after less settled appearances elsewhere. These reports support agreement about the music more clearly than about the frontman’s condition; no medical or official account exists, so descriptions should remain attributed to observers.

VRT said before the festival that Studio Brussel and VRT MAX would offer simultaneous streams from several Rock Werchter stages, allowing viewers to switch between performances. The service and much of its surrounding presentation are primarily in Dutch. Rock Werchter publishes practical information in Dutch, French and English, which is useful for newcomers navigating the linguistic difference between a Flemish gemeente and the French term commune. Werchter itself is part of the gemeente Rotselaar in Flemish Brabant.

For future visits, the durable advice is simple: use the festival’s current official information rather than an old timetable, check transport notices from De Lijn and the gemeente Rotselaar, and bring proper hearing protection. The Flemish Department of Environment says prolonged exposure above 85 dB(A) can damage hearing and recommends both earplugs and quiet breaks. Under Flemish VLAREM rules, organisers of music activities above specified sound thresholds must make disposable hearing protection freely available, but reusable musician-grade plugs generally provide a better listening experience.

Rotselaar’s 2026 resident information also described special De Lijn services, temporary traffic arrangements and cycling as the fastest way to move around Werchter during festival periods. Those measures are event-specific and can change each year; visitors should not assume that a route or stop used in 2026 will operate identically at the next edition.

Gorillaz’s Werchter appearance ultimately mattered less as proof that one set was objectively perfect than as evidence of what an experienced festival act can do with a complicated catalogue. The group gave the crowd its communal refrains, made room for guests and allowed an India-shaped musical chapter to alter the sound of the field. The next question is whether those new textures remain central as the tour continues, or whether Werchter caught a particularly successful balance that will be difficult to reproduce.
