For followers of football in Flanders, the timing gives the moves an immediate edge: Wevelgem and Heestert meet on the opening matchday. The fixture turns two otherwise modest late-summer transfers into an early test of contrasting ambitions. Wevelgem has added experience to its defence; Heestert is betting that a forward with experience in France’s professional system can supply goals.

Van De Geuchte’s move also carries a more complicated human story. FC Gullegem released him and Pieter De Smet roughly two weeks before the league campaign, after deciding that neither was likely to receive sufficient playing time. Vandendriessche argued that Van De Geuchte had fallen down the defensive order and that clarity was preferable to keeping him without meaningful minutes. Those perspectives do not resolve the dispute over timing, but they explain why a defender thought to be staying at Gullegem became available so close to the season.

Wevelgem moved quickly. Het Nieuwsblad described the club as one of the expected contenders in First Provincial, although coach Eddy Verbeeck has publicly tempered title talk after two seasons in which lofty expectations gave way to relegation battles. Verbeeck said Van De Geuchte’s experience and ability to organise the back line could add value. The player’s route through clubs including KRC Gent, RFC Wetteren and FC Gullegem gives him familiarity with football above the provincial tier, even if his precise role at Wevelgem remains to be established.

Heestert’s addition is the more international of the two. Madiani developed at RC Lens and appeared in French professional football before spells that included Paris FC and Quevilly-Rouen. Belgian reporting places him more recently at La Louvière Centre and Eendracht Wervik. He now crosses from Wervik to Heestert, both in West Flanders, illustrating how Belgium’s provincial competitions draw on player networks extending across the French border and through the country’s higher amateur divisions.

That background should not be mistaken for a guarantee of goals. Historical career records identify Madiani primarily as a winger or attacker, and his professional scoring figures were modest. Heestert’s framing is therefore aspirational: the club has recruited experience and attacking options, but competitive matches must show whether those qualities translate into regular finishing at provincial level.

The broader picture is one of a fluid semi-professional market. Short travel distances, free transfers and personal familiarity allow clubs in Flanders to reshape squads even as the season approaches. Voetbal Vlaanderen, the Flemish wing of the Belgian football federation, administers the provincial competition structure in which these clubs operate; this is a Belgian sporting story rather than an EU institutional matter.
