, ahead of its entry into service, creating the operator’s first depot intended ultimately for an entirely electric fleet. LETEC said on 19 August that the project, financed through the EU-backed Belgian recovery plan and Wallonia’s recovery programme, will maintain, operate and recharge the high-capacity electric buses being introduced around the city’s tram network.

For passengers, the immediate promise is practical: more capacity between Liège-Guillemins station and the university and hospital campus at Sart-Tilman, alongside quieter vehicles with no exhaust emissions. The investment also makes Liège a test of whether European recovery money can translate ambitious climate policy into dependable everyday transport rather than simply new hardware.

Mobi’Park is equipped with 38 charging points and five high-voltage cabins, providing 18 megavolt-amperes of power, of which 15 MVA is reserved for vehicle charging, according to LETEC. The operator expects 500 people, including about 350 drivers, to work at the site. It says the depot will eventually handle 31 routes carrying nearly 60,000 passengers a day.

Among the first vehicles supported there will be 18 Solaris Urbino 24 electric MetroStyle buses, known locally as “tribus”. Built by Polish manufacturer Solaris, these 24.7-metre, double-articulated vehicles can carry up to 150 passengers. LETEC received the first unit in June and plans to deploy the buses on the BUSWAY B2 corridor linking Guillemins with Sart-Tilman. The manufacturer says its framework agreement covers as many as 45 vehicles, although only the initial 18-unit order is confirmed for this phase.

That distinction matters because the transition remains a programme in progress. LETEC reported that its fleet contained 1,945 vehicles in 2025, including 829 hybrids but only 14 fully electric buses. Depot conversions and deliveries are scheduled to continue through 2029, while the operator’s stated long-term objective is an entirely zero-emission bus fleet by 2045.

Walloon Mobility Minister François Desquesnes presents the Tilleur investment chiefly as an urban-quality project. Speaking to Liège broadcaster QU4TRE, he emphasised quieter streets, better air and lower climate emissions. LETEC administrator-general Jean-Michel Soors has similarly described electric BUSWAY services as a faster, more reliable and more comfortable alternative to private cars.

The passenger-side view is more guarded. Michel Schoonbroodt, head of LETEC’s Liège-Verviers unit, told QU4TRE in April that Liège’s redesigned tram-and-bus network remained in a bedding-in period and that passengers had strongly criticised parts of the bus reorganisation. He argued that a network of this scale can take three years to become fully operational. New buses and chargers therefore answer only part of the challenge: frequency, staffing, connections and operational resilience will determine whether riders experience the promised improvement.

Choosing Solaris gives this procurement a distinctly European manufacturing dimension at a time when EU institutions are debating how public spending can strengthen domestic clean-technology supply chains. Yet existing procurement rules measure environmental performance and competitive compliance; they do not make European origin alone proof of lower lifetime cost, reliable delivery or better service.
