This is not simply the loss of a festival grant. Under the Flemish Amateur Arts Decree, an umbrella organisation supports practitioners and groups across its discipline through information, guidance, training and talent development. Muziekmozaïek currently fills that role for folk and jazz. An official 2025 subsidy overview placed its annual support at €817,727.65, although the authority cautioned that no rights could be derived from the listed amounts.

The Flemish administration says support for folk and jazz should continue and that talks will seek a “warm transfer” of the umbrella organisation’s core duties. Precisely which body will assume which services, and with what people, expertise and resources, has not been made public. That leaves Muziekmozaïek facing an immediate organisational problem even if individual activities can generate ticket income or attract other partners.

Gooikoorts and the summer course do not have identical economics. The course can charge participants for a package of tuition, accommodation and meals and can be reshaped around registrations. A three-day festival must commit earlier to artists, production, insurance, infrastructure and visitor services while depending on ticket sales, partners and a large volunteer operation.

Gooikoorts’s own website presented the 2026 event as an international festival combining Belgian talent and visiting performers, concerts, folk balls, a makers’ market, family activities and camping. The gemeente Pajottegem listed Muziekmozaïek as organiser at the athletics ground on Houteman in Gooik. Local reporting has indicated a desire among the festival team to return in 2027, but the legal organiser, budget, scale and division of responsibilities have not been fully clarified. A stated intention to continue is therefore not yet the same as a confirmed edition with dates, tickets and a programme.

For residents and visitors, the safest approach is straightforward: use Stagegooik.be for the teaching week and Gooikoorts.be for festival announcements; do not book non-refundable travel until dates and registration or ticket sales appear on the relevant official site. The public information is principally in Dutch, fitting the Flemish setting and the municipality’s Dutch-language services. International musicians who do not read Dutch should ask the organiser which workshop languages a tutor can accommodate before paying. Musical notation and demonstration may cross language barriers, but safety instructions, cancellation conditions and youth-supervision rules still need to be understood. Gooik is now a deelgemeente of the merged gemeente Pajottegem; searches under either place name may surface relevant information.

The dispute reveals how cultural infrastructure can be less visible than the event it sustains. Festival-goers see performers, tents and dances; structural funding also pays for year-round coordination, specialist knowledge and relationships among teachers, musicians, organisers and volunteers. Those networks are difficult to transfer merely by assigning a formal responsibility elsewhere.

The two main positions are nevertheless understandable. The Flemish Government followed a competitive assessment and says folk and jazz will retain support through a future arrangement. Muziekmozaïek and its community face the loss of an established specialist institution and argue, in effect, that continuing selected events cannot replace the wider ecosystem. The coming months will show whether the promised transfer preserves that expertise or disperses it.

The firm point for 2027 is the return of the Stage voor Volksmuziek. What it will cost, which sessions it will offer and how much of the surrounding programme can be retained still await publication. For Gooikoorts, visitors should watch for confirmation of an organiser, dates, financing and ticket sales. Until those pieces are in place, its future is best described as open rather than assured or cancelled.
