Can celebrity holidays really change the way Greece is travelled?
Madonna, Justin Bieber, Katy Perry and other international celebrities showcased Greek destinations during summer 2026, giving the country valuable exposure as arrivals and tourism receipts continued to grow.
In 30 seconds
- Bank of Greece data put 2025 travel receipts at €23.63 billion, 9.4% above 2024.
- Inbound traveller flows to Greece increased by 6.4% in 2025.
- Eurostat says July and August accounted for 41.6% of Greek accommodation nights in 2025.
- ERT documented celebrity visits to destinations including Corfu, Meteora, Porto Heli and Skiathos in August 2026.
, Justin Bieber, Katy Perry and other international celebrities turned Greece into a highly visible holiday backdrop in summer 2026, sharing or generating coverage of stays from Corfu to Mykonos and Porto Heli. Greek public broadcaster ERT reported on 20 August that Madonna visited Corfu and Meteora, the Bieber family stayed around Porto Heli, and Kate Hudson returned to Skiathos. The practical lesson for travellers is straightforward: celebrity attention can reveal attractive places, but it can also accelerate demand, so compare islands, dates and transport before copying a famous itinerary.
Madonna’s visit received an unusually official welcome. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis publicly invited her to return after she shared scenes from Greece, according to an AFP report carried by La Libre and other international publishers. Justin Bieber and his family were associated with Porto Heli and nearby Spetses, while reporting placed Katy Perry and former Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau in Mykonos. Other celebrities brought attention to Skiathos, Hydra and destinations beyond the familiar pairing of Mykonos and Santorini.
The resulting publicity has obvious value, but there is not yet public evidence that allows the summer’s growth to be attributed to individual stars. Celebrity posts, expanded air capacity, films, years of destination marketing and accumulated demand all overlap. The Bank of Greece offers the sturdier baseline: final data released in May 2026 show that the country earned €23.63 billion in travel receipts in 2025, up 9.4% year on year, while inbound traveller flows increased by 6.4%. Those figures establish that tourism was already expanding before this summer’s celebrity coverage.
Visitors from the United States are particularly valuable to the industry. The AFP report, citing Bank of Greece and tourism-sector data, put the 2025 American market at roughly 1.55 million visitors and €1.74 billion in receipts. Reported average spending was about €1,120 per American traveller. The expansion of direct links between Athens and the United States therefore matters at least as much as social-media glamour: the report counted 103 weekly direct services to nine US destinations in 2026, operated by five airlines.
From celebrity posts to screen-inspired travel
Greece is benefiting from two related forms of cultural promotion. One is the informal endorsement created when an internationally recognised visitor posts a boat trip, beach or old town. The other is “set-jetting”: choosing a destination after seeing it in a film or television series. Greece experienced that effect after “Mamma Mia!” drew attention to Skopelos, and the AFP report suggested that productions filmed in the Peloponnese and on Greek islands could spread interest again.
This matters because the new spotlight is not confined to established luxury enclaves. Corfu is an Ionian island with a substantial resident community and a UNESCO-listed old town; Skiathos and Skopelos belong to the Sporades; Spetses and Hydra are Saronic islands reached by sea from the Athens area; and Porto Heli is on the Peloponnese mainland. They are not interchangeable. Ferry frequency, road access, nightlife, beach style and the availability of accommodation vary sharply, particularly outside July and August.
For travellers starting in Belgium, that makes route design more useful than celebrity imitation. Direct and connecting flight schedules from Brussels Airport, Brussels South Charleroi Airport and regional airports change seasonally, so the final leg may require a domestic flight, ferry or road transfer. A photograph tagged “Greece” can conceal several hours of onward travel. Book flexible connections, check ferry operators directly and allow a buffer if separate tickets are involved.
The price of being seen
The economic case for welcoming high-spending visitors is strong: hotels, restaurants, guides, ferry companies and local producers all benefit. Tourism also helped Greece recover from its sovereign-debt crisis and the pandemic shock. Yet the concentration of demand carries costs that a glamorous social post rarely shows.
Eurostat reported in July 2026 that 41.6% of Greece’s accommodation nights in 2025 occurred in July and August, one of the strongest seasonal concentrations in the EU. The European Commission’s Tourism Dashboard has separately identified Greek island destinations with exceptionally high visitor intensity. Corfu, Kalymnos, Karpathos, Kos and Rhodes recorded peaks of between 115 and 145 tourist nights per resident in the 2019–2023 data examined by the Commission. Such concentration can strain water, waste systems, housing and transport while making local employment more seasonal.
That is the central tension. Greek tourism businesses and national authorities see international visibility as a way to attract lucrative markets and distribute demand among more destinations. Residents, environmental organisations and left-wing opposition parties have warned that dependence on ever-growing visitor numbers can worsen housing pressure, congestion and resource use. Both perspectives can be true: tourism sustains livelihoods, while unmanaged peaks can diminish the places visitors came to enjoy.
Travellers can reduce that pressure without turning a holiday into an exercise in guilt. May, June, September and early October generally offer a broader choice of accommodation and less intense demand than the summer peak, although weather and transport remain island-specific. Staying several nights, buying from locally owned businesses and avoiding water-intensive habits are more useful than racing through several islands for photographs. Anyone visiting a smaller island should also confirm medical facilities and late-season ferry schedules in advance.
What residents of Belgium should check
As of 26 August 2026, the Belgian Embassy in Athens says Belgian citizens can travel to Greece with a valid Belgian identity card; each child needs an appropriate valid document as well. If renewal is necessary, the application belongs with the local commune in French-speaking administration or gemeente in Dutch-speaking administration. Non-Belgian residents of Belgium should check the entry conditions attached to their own nationality and residence status rather than assuming that a Belgian residence card replaces a passport.
The SPF Affaires étrangères/FOD Buitenlandse Zaken maintains Greece advice in French and Dutch and recommends registration through Travellers Online. Its guidance also highlights frequent seismic activity, summer wildfires, pickpocketing in tourist areas and the value of adequate medical and repatriation insurance. A European Health Insurance Card helps with necessary public healthcare under EU arrangements, but the SPF notes that supplementary cover may still be prudent.
Greek is the official local language. English is commonly used in tourism businesses, but service in French or Dutch should not be assumed; retaining Greek-script place names on a phone can help with taxis, ports and bus stops. The EU emergency number is 112. Travellers should monitor official alerts and the Belgian travel-advice page during periods of extreme heat or wildfire risk.
Celebrity exposure will probably continue to push Greece’s lesser-known destinations into international feeds, while film and television productions add another layer of promotion. What remains unknown is how much this publicity produces genuinely additional demand, how widely the benefits spread, and whether infrastructure can keep pace. The more useful question is therefore not where Madonna or Bieber stayed, but whether the destination, season and journey suit the traveller—and the island receiving them.
What to do
If travelling from Belgium, compare several Greek destinations instead of copying a celebrity itinerary, and check accommodation prices, transport connections and local capacity before paying. July and August accounted for 41.6% of Greek accommodation nights in 2025, so travelling outside those peak months may offer more choice and reduce exposure to the busiest period. Belgian citizens can use a valid identity card for Greece, but should confirm that it remains valid and consult the latest SPF Affaires étrangères/FOD Buitenlandse Zaken advice before departure.
Impact
Regional — The publicity reaches Ionian, Saronic, Sporades, Cycladic and Peloponnesian destinations, potentially distributing interest beyond Mykonos and Santorini. Its benefits and pressures will vary with each locality’s infrastructure and dependence on seasonal tourism.
