Can Bscovery turn Belgium’s appetite for tailor-made travel into a €100m business?
Belgian premium-travel group Bscovery has set a target of €100 million in annual turnover by 2028 after acquiring Flemish operator Caractère.
In 30 seconds
- Bscovery reports about €63 million in combined annual turnover and targets €100 million by 2028.
- The group says it has eight brands, five legal entities, about 90 travel professionals and coverage of roughly 90 destinations.
- Caractère adds Southern European expertise, an online booking capability and access to Flemish and Dutch customers.
- Bscovery says 85% to 90% of its clients are Belgian, with about two-thirds of those customers in Flanders.
Belgian premium-travel group Bscovery has set itself the goal of reaching €100 million in annual turnover by 2028, following its acquisition of Flemish tailor-made travel operator Caractère. Chief executive Hervé Ollagnier told La Libre in August that the group currently generates about €63 million across its businesses and intends to grow through further acquisitions as well as increased sales. For anyone considering an expensive tailor-made holiday, the immediate takeaway is simple: identify the company named on the contract, confirm that the proposed combination is legally a package and locate the insolvency insurer before paying a large deposit.
The Caractère deal, announced in June, adds a well-established Flemish operator specialising in Southern Europe, exclusive itineraries and boutique hotels. It complements Bscovery brands that are stronger in long-haul travel, including Continents Insolites, World of Travel, Atlas Reizen and Préférence. The purchase price was not disclosed, so it is not possible to assess independently how much financial risk Bscovery assumed or how quickly the acquisition might contribute to profits.
Ollagnier said Bscovery now operates eight brands through five legal entities in Belgium, France and Luxembourg, employs about 90 travel professionals and covers roughly 90 destinations. He put its recent annual growth at around 8% and described the group as structurally profitable. Those figures are management claims reported by La Libre rather than audited consolidated numbers supplied with the interview. Public company information confirms that Bscovery SA is an active Belgian company registered at Rue des Francs 79 in the bilingual commune/gemeente of Etterbeek, under enterprise number BE 0475.918.820, but the parent company’s statutory accounts do not by themselves reproduce the reported turnover of all underlying brands.
Why buy several specialist agencies?
The strategy rests on a familiar consolidation argument: retain the personality and expertise of individual agencies while combining purchasing, technology, customer data and administrative functions behind the scenes. Caractère brings strength in Italy, Spain, Portugal and Croatia, access to the Dutch market and an online reservation system. Other Bscovery businesses concentrate more heavily on complex long-haul itineraries assembled with local destination partners.
This matters because high-end travel remains a market in which customers often pay for judgement rather than inventory alone. An online platform can sell a hotel room, but a specialist adviser may coordinate guides, transfers, unusual accommodation and contingency plans across several countries. Ollagnier argues that artificial intelligence can remove repetitive work and give advisers more time to understand clients. The commercial test will be whether a larger group can gain efficiency without making its distinctive agencies feel interchangeable.
Bscovery says between 85% and 90% of its customers currently come from Belgium, with roughly two-thirds of that Belgian clientele in Flanders. Its reported average booking is about €25,000 for three and a half travellers, although spending varies by brand. That concentration explains why acquiring Caractère is more than a geographical addition: it deepens the group’s position in its largest linguistic market while creating a route towards the Netherlands.
Customers should expect language and documentation to follow the contracting agency. A Brussels or Walloon-facing brand may work primarily in French, while Caractère and Atlas Reizen serve a largely Dutch-speaking public. In bilingual Brussels, ask whether the quotation, standard information form, emergency assistance and final contract are available in French or Dutch before accepting the proposal. The legal protections do not depend on the language chosen, but resolving a disagreement is considerably easier when the traveller fully understands the cancellation schedule, insurance exclusions and division of responsibility.
What should travellers check before paying?
Belgium’s FPS Economy says a retailer must provide clear pre-contract information for a package, including the destination, transport, accommodation, total price, payment terms, passport and visa requirements, cancellation rules and optional insurance. It must also supply the mandatory standard information form explaining the traveller’s rights. A package generally combines at least two types of travel service for the same trip under the conditions set by Belgium’s 2017 package-travel law.
The name above an agency door may not be the organiser named in the paperwork. Customers can search the legal entity and enterprise number through the Crossroads Bank for Enterprises, known as BCE in French and KBO in Dutch. They should then find the insolvency insurer’s details in the contract or booking confirmation. According to the FPS Economy, that insurance can cover reimbursement, continuation of the trip and, when necessary, repatriation if an organiser or retailer becomes insolvent. A flight bought separately does not automatically receive the same package protection.
For a costly itinerary, retain the quotation, standard information form, contract, invoices and written record of requested changes. If something goes wrong during the journey, the FPS Economy advises raising it immediately with the responsible provider and then notifying the organiser in writing. Where the agency uses the relevant general conditions, the Commission de Litiges Voyages/Geschillencommissie Reizen may offer an out-of-court route; suspected consumer-law violations can also be reported through ConsumerConnect.
The broader view
Bscovery’s expansion illustrates how premium tourism is becoming both more personal and more consolidated. Its chief executive says affluent travellers increasingly favour cultural encounters, nature and personal enrichment over conspicuous luxury. That assessment fits the group’s positioning, but claims of greener or more authentic travel still need to be judged itinerary by itinerary. Long-haul flights remain emissions-intensive, while labels such as “responsible”, “exclusive” and “local” have no single meaning across the sector.
There is also a resilience argument. A portfolio spanning Southern Europe, Africa, Asia, Latin America and Northern Europe can redirect demand when conflict, extreme weather or transport disruption affects one region. Yet scale cannot remove geopolitical exposure, and a group promising close personal service must still support customers when an itinerary unravels.
The next milestones are therefore concrete. Bscovery must integrate Caractère, preserve each brand’s specialist identity and find enough organic growth or acquisitions to add roughly €37 million to the turnover figure cited in August. Ollagnier said further deals were under examination, with Belgium, France, the Netherlands and Luxembourg the priority markets before any later move into countries such as Switzerland or Spain. Until audited consolidated figures or transaction details are published, the €100 million figure should be read as an ambition, not a forecast with a demonstrated financing plan.
What to do
Before paying a deposit, ask for the legal name and company details of the business signing your contract; do not rely only on the Bscovery or subsidiary brand name. Check whether the combination of flights, accommodation and other services qualifies as a package, obtain the prescribed pre-contract information and identify the insolvency insurer protecting your money. Keep the offer, contract, payment evidence and insurance details together. If something goes wrong, complain first to the named organiser or retailer and use the FPS Economy’s travel-problem guidance. The €100 million figure is a 2028 business target, not a customer guarantee.
Impact
Regional — The acquisition strengthens Bscovery in Flanders and gives the Brussels-based group a larger Dutch-speaking customer base. Its French-speaking brands remain prominent in Brussels and Walloon Brabant, making clear bilingual contracting and customer support commercially important.

What the main actors are doing
Reported positions, summarised — not direct quotationsBscovery management and specialist-agency owners
Bscovery presents consolidation as a way to preserve specialist brands while sharing technology, purchasing power, customer data and operational expertise. Management argues that scale improves resilience and lets advisers spend more time on personal service.
Independent travellers and digital-platform users
Travellers comfortable booking flights and hotels directly may question whether an agency’s margin adds enough value. Their alternative offers greater control and potentially lower prices, although separately purchased services may carry weaker insolvency and package-travel protection.
Sustainable-tourism advocates
The shift from conspicuous luxury towards nature and supposedly authentic experiences may be welcome, but environmental claims require evidence. Bespoke long-haul itineraries can still have a large climate footprint regardless of their branding or accommodation choices.
