Brandy records new theme for Netflix’s ‘A Different World’ sequel

UNITED STATES, 11 August 2026 — Netflix announced that Brandy Norwood has recorded a new rendition of the theme song for its forthcoming ‘A Different World’ sequel series, confirming that her performance will open all 10 episodes when the comedy premieres on 24 September. Netflix released a studio preview alongside the announcement, while Deadline independently reported Brandy’s involvement.

Brandy told Netflix’s Tudum that the original programme had inspired her as a child and encouraged her ambitions in acting. According to Netflix, her version retains the familiar lyrics while introducing a new arrangement. The company has not published full recording credits or announced whether the track will receive a separate commercial release.

The casting connects two strands of Black American television history. Netflix notes that Brandy later led the sitcom ‘Moesha’, which ran from 1996 to 2001, and starred in the 1997 television adaptation of ‘Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella’. The original ‘A Different World’, meanwhile, ran on NBC from 1987 to 1993 and portrayed student life at the fictional historically Black Hillman College, according to Netflix.

Dawnn Lewis, who appeared in the original series and is returning as a guest star, co-wrote its theme, Netflix says. Aretha Franklin performed the best-known version during the original run. Brandy told Tudum that following Franklin in the role made the assignment especially significant to her.

The sequel shifts the story to Deborah Wayne, played by Maleah Joi Moon, as she begins her first year at Hillman. Netflix identifies Deborah as the daughter of Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne, with Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison reprising those roles. TVLine reports that the production uses a single-camera format and brings back several other members of the original ensemble.

Felicia Pride serves as showrunner, writer and executive producer, according to Netflix. Debbie Allen, a major creative figure in the original programme, is an executive producer and directed the new premiere. Netflix said in May that filming had finished in Atlanta.

For viewers in Belgium, the development has no specific local production or policy impact; its relevance is as an international streaming release. Netflix has announced the 24 September platform premiere but has not detailed the title’s Belgian catalogue availability, soundtrack release plans or prospects for a second season.
