Belgium lifts weather alerts as unsettled Atlantic conditions return

UPDATED 17 AUGUST 2026, 13:00 CEST — BRUSSELS. Belgium had no active weather warnings at midday on Monday, 17 August, the Royal Meteorological Institute reported, superseding earlier coverage that described the country as still under alert. The RMI’s forecast, updated at 12:00, placed Belgium behind an overnight rain band and under cooler, slightly unstable maritime air.

For Monday afternoon, the RMI forecast extensive cloud, occasional brighter spells and a remaining shower risk concentrated in the south-east. Temperatures were expected to range from 17°C in the High Fens to 25°C in Belgian Lorraine, with 21°C to 23°C across central Belgium. A light to moderate north-westerly wind was forecast nationwide.

Conditions differ by region. The RMI expected the warmest weather in Belgian Lorraine, while the Ardennes and High Fens remained cooler and more exposed to showers. Central areas, including Brussels, were set for moderate temperatures and mixed cloud. The coast and north-west were forecast to turn cloudier overnight as a new frontal system approached, with rain or drizzle reaching that half of the country before Tuesday.

The official outlook shows no immediate return to severe heat. According to the RMI, Tuesday will be predominantly grey as rain and drizzle move from north-west to south-east, followed by showers. Maximum temperatures will range from 17°C in the High Fens to 24°C in central Belgium and Belgian Lorraine; winds will strengthen most noticeably along the coast.

Wednesday brings another rain-bearing front, the RMI said, before drier air and clearer intervals arrive from the north-west during the afternoon. Thursday and Friday retain a shower risk, including isolated thunder, while weekend temperatures settle near 19°C to 21°C in most regions.

The distinction between a forecast and an alert is important. The RMI issues colour-coded warnings by province when defined thresholds and probabilities are met; ordinary rain, showers or isolated thunder do not automatically constitute an alert. Its warning guidance says yellow denotes a need for vigilance, orange calls for preparation and red requires protective action.

Residents planning journeys or outdoor events should therefore prepare for changeable conditions rather than exceptional weather. The RMI will update provincial warnings if forecast intensity crosses its thresholds, while short-range municipal flash notices remain separate from the national warning map.
