België sloot zich aan bij de F-16-coalitie nadat de grootschalige invasie van Rusland Oekraïnes partners ertoe had aangezet om van munitie- en luchtverdedigingssteun over te schakelen naar geavanceerde westerse vliegtuigen. In mei 2024 ondertekenden België en Oekraïne in Brussel een tienjarige veiligheidsovereenkomst met daarin een belofte van 30 F-16’s. Die belofte past binnen een bredere Europese verschuiving van noodhulp naar langdurige militaire integratie met Oekraïne.
