The suspect had reportedly arrived by train from France. He was taken into custody, while the Brussels public prosecutor had not yet disclosed his alleged purpose, destination or possible links to other people.

The discovery matters immediately to passengers and staff at Belgium’s busiest international rail gateway. Brussels-Midi—Brussel-Zuid in Dutch and Gare du Midi in French—serves domestic trains as well as international connections, including Eurostar services. This was an incident in the Belgian capital’s transport network, not at an EU institution, but the station is routinely used by residents, commuters, tourists and people working around the European quarter.

The Brussels Times reported that a customs officer discovered the weapon during an inspection at about 09:30. De Morgen reported that it was loaded with 30 rounds and concealed in a sports bag beneath baby and children’s clothing. De Standaard said customs staff had noticed suspicious behaviour and alerted the police after finding the weapon. A mixed patrol involving the Federal Railway Police and military personnel then arrested the man. No source reported that he displayed or fired the weapon inside the station.

Federal Interior Minister Bernard Quintin of the francophone liberal MR party confirmed the arrest and thanked the services for what he called their “rapid and decisive action”. He argued that the episode demonstrated why reinforced patrols in railway and metro stations, supported by military personnel, were crucial and should be maintained or expanded. His response places the arrest inside Belgium’s continuing political debate over how to secure Brussels transport hubs and areas affected by armed violence.

That interpretation is politically significant, but the publicly established sequence requires some care. The available reports say customs personnel first identified the man and found the firearm; police and military personnel were involved in the subsequent arrest. The case therefore demonstrates cooperation among services, although the information released so far does not establish which element of the patrol arrangement was indispensable to the result.

Belgian critics of domestic military deployment frame the question differently from Quintin. The ACMP military union has previously argued, in comments reported by BRUZZ, that soldiers lack the same powers as police to check identities or detain people and need a clear regulatory framework. Brussels neighbourhood committees and politicians from Groen and Open VLD have also questioned whether soldiers are an effective answer to organised crime and neighbourhood insecurity. Their position is not that stations should go unprotected, but that policing, investigation and prosecution remain civilian responsibilities requiring sustained resources.

The international element is narrower but real: the suspect reportedly travelled from France into Belgium carrying a military-grade firearm. That raises questions for Belgian and French investigators about where the weapon came from, how it entered the rail network and whether the journey formed part of a wider criminal plan. It does not, on present evidence, prove a terrorist motive, an organised-crime connection or a failure by Eurostar. Neither EU institutions nor French authorities had announced a role in the investigation by Thursday afternoon.

The arrest also came shortly after a large integrated security operation in Brussels. The Federal Police said that an operation on 28 August brought together all six Brussels police zones, the Railway Police, Defence, Securail, the Brussels prosecutor and other services. Officers checked 1,133 people and seized 11 weapons, among other results. That background helps explain Quintin’s emphasis on visible joint patrols, but it does not answer the central questions in this individual case.

Investigators must now establish the suspect’s identity and itinerary, obtain a precise forensic classification of the firearm, trace its origin and determine why it was being transported. The prosecutor must also decide what charges and further detention measures to seek. Until those findings are released, the strongest conclusion is limited but serious: a loaded weapon was intercepted at a major cross-border station, and an immediate danger was removed without reported gunfire or injuries.
