Italian local outlet Cronachedi reported the attack on 1 September, while Belgian newspapers carried the account the following day; neither the victims’ current condition nor any arrest had been publicly confirmed by Friday.

For people travelling from Belgium, the case is a reminder that an ordinary city break elsewhere in the European Union can abruptly become a medical, police and consular matter. Belgium’s FPS Foreign Affairs says Italy can generally be visited safely when normal precautions are observed, but separately warns that tourists face a year-round risk of pickpocketing in busy visitor areas and on public transport. Its published guidance has not been changed in response to this individual attack.

According to Cronachedi, the two young men were approached in Piazza Luigi Miraglia, in the Vicaria area of central Naples, close to the Tribunali district where they were staying in a bed and breakfast. The newspaper said the assailants targeted valuables: one Belgian received a knife wound to the abdomen, while his companion was punched as a gold chain reportedly worth about €500 was pulled from his neck. The attackers then fled through the surrounding narrow streets.

Emergency services brought both victims to the nearby Pellegrini hospital, Cronachedi and Het Nieuwsblad reported. Investigators were examining footage from public and private security cameras around the square and adjoining streets in an attempt to reconstruct the escape route. Public reporting has not established the precise time of the attack, the number of assailants, the severity of the stab wound or whether the stolen chain was recovered.

The incident came amid wider local concern over robberies targeting visitors in central Naples. Cronachedi presented it as part of an escalation and reported demands from traders and residents for a permanent police presence on major routes through the old centre. That framing should be treated with care: no official crime series was supplied to demonstrate the scale of any increase. There is, however, contemporary evidence of the policing pressure. Naples police said officers arrested two people near Piazza Garibaldi on 29 August after witnessing a tourist being pushed and robbed of a gold necklace.

The Belgian institutional response is more measured. FPS Foreign Affairs warns chiefly about theft in tourist locations, metros, buses, stations and airports, rather than advising against travel to Naples or Italy. As of 4 September, neither the FPS nor Belgium’s embassy in Rome appeared to have issued a public statement specifically about the two injured Belgians. That silence does not show that no consular assistance was provided: such help is commonly handled confidentially, particularly when victims’ health and personal data are involved.

Belgium’s embassy in Rome directs citizens facing an immediate danger to the EU-wide emergency number 112 and maintains an after-hours line for extremely urgent consular cases. Medical treatment is primarily an Italian responsibility. Under EU rules, a Belgian insured person carrying a European Health Insurance Card is entitled to necessary public healthcare during a temporary stay in Italy on the same conditions as locally insured patients. The card does not cover private treatment or repatriation, which is why separate travel insurance can still matter after a serious assault.

The immediate focus remains the Italian investigation and the recovery of the two young men. Camera images may help identify the attackers, but authorities had announced no breakthrough publicly by Friday. Until police or Belgian officials provide further information, the victims’ prognosis, the full sequence of events and any consular involvement should be regarded as unresolved.
