on Saturday 8 August. Klein, who lived in Heusden-Zolder, died at the scene. The immediate practical point for anyone who feels unsafe during a relationship conflict is simple: move to a public or secure place if that can be done safely, call police on 101 when danger is immediate, and use 112 for urgent medical help.

in Lommel earlier that day. According to reporting by Het Nieuwsblad, they left following an argument and later travelled in the man’s van. Klein got out on the Kerkhovenweg at about 19.30. The van subsequently struck her while reversing, but the precise movement of the vehicle and the driver’s intention remain central, unresolved questions.

About

Limburg, also known as Dutch Limburg, is the southernmost of the twelve provinces of the Netherlands. It is bordered by Gelderland to the north and by North Brabant to the west. Its long eastern boundary forms the border with the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. To the west is the border with the Belgian province of Limburg, part of which is delineated by the river Meuse. To the south, Limburg is bordered by the Belgian province of Liège.

public prosecutor’s office sent a traffic expert, forensic doctor and judicial laboratory to examine the scene, regional broadcaster TV Limburg reported. The driver was arrested shortly afterwards and questioned by the Noord-Limburg police zone. An investigating judge in Hasselt placed him under an arrest warrant on suspicion of murder, and the Hasselt raadkamer later confirmed his continued detention.

That legal description is an allegation, not a verdict. In Dutch-language coverage, the phrase “aangehouden op verdenking van moord” means that a suspect has been detained while being investigated under a provisional murder classification. It does not mean that a court has found him guilty. Belgian criminal proceedings preserve the presumption of innocence, and the qualification can change as forensic reports, witness statements and other evidence are assessed.

Prosecutors have said that all possibilities remain under investigation. Het Nieuwsblad reported that an alcohol breath test showed the driver had consumed too much alcohol to drive legally, while a saliva test for drugs was negative. Alcohol consumption, although potentially relevant to the reconstruction, does not by itself establish an intention to kill.

The suspect’s lawyer, Vanessa Penninger, told the newspaper that her client denied deliberately hitting Klein, was deeply affected and was cooperating with investigators. That account represents the defence position; it has not been established independently. The prosecution’s decision to investigate the collision as possible murder reflects the seriousness of the available indications, but the evidence supporting that provisional classification has not been made public in full.

What investigators still need to establish

The inquiry must reconstruct why the couple changed transport after attending the festival, what happened inside or around the van, how and why the vehicle reversed, and whether the driver could see Klein. Statements from witnesses, telecommunications data, vehicle traces and the traffic expert’s findings may all inform that reconstruction. No public trial date has been announced, and detention hearings decide whether a suspect remains in custody—not whether the accusation has been proved.

The case has an intensely local geography. Pinopop took place in the Lommel gemeente, Klein lived in neighbouring Heusden-Zolder, and the collision occurred in the municipality of Leopoldsburg. The judicial investigation is being handled in the Hasselt judicial district. For newcomers, the Dutch terms gemeente and the French commune both mean municipality; Dutch is the administrative language in these Limburg municipalities.

The FPS Justice, formerly the Ministry of Justice, is a federal public service of Belgium. It was created by royal order on 23 May 2001, as part of the plans of the Verhofstadt I Government (1999–2003) to modernise the federal administration. states that victims and bereaved relatives are entitled to respectful treatment, information, legal assistance, psychosocial support and protection of their privacy. A police complaint alone is not always sufficient to obtain compensation: relatives should seek legal advice about registering as an injured party or becoming a civil party. Where a death results from an intentional violent act, eligible relatives may also be able to apply to the federal Commission for Financial Assistance to Victims of Intentional Acts of Violence, subject to its conditions.

People who are worried about violence in their own relationship—or about a friend, colleague or neighbour—can contact 1712 anonymously and free of charge. In an immediate emergency anywhere in Belgium, the correct numbers remain 101 for police and 112 for medical assistance or the fire service. If language is a barrier, state the location and the language needed as clearly as possible.

Klein’s death should not be used to claim facts about the relationship that investigators have not established. It does, however, illustrate why a fatal collision involving intimate partners may require both traffic expertise and a wider criminal inquiry. The distinction between an accident, reckless conduct and an intentional act depends on evidence rather than the initial headline.

The next meaningful developments will be further detention reviews, completion of the forensic and traffic reports, and a decision by prosecutors on the eventual charge. Until then, the central question—whether the driver intentionally struck Klein—remains unanswered, and the suspect is entitled to the presumption of innocence.

What to do

Readers with first-hand information about Kerkhovenweg on the evening of 8 August should contact police on 101 and preserve relevant photographs, video or journey records. Use 112 for an immediate medical or safety emergency. Relatives and witnesses can consult CAW victim support and the Federal Public Service Justice guidance on victims’ rights. Anyone concerned about partner violence can seek confidential advice from 1712. The suspect’s continued detention does not establish guilt, and readers should avoid identifying private individuals, speculating about intent or repeating unsupported claims while the judicial investigation continues.

Impact

Regional — The death connects three Limburg municipalities—Lommel, Heusden-Zolder and Leopoldsburg—and is being investigated through police and judicial services in the Hasselt district. Local residents may also have relevant witness information about the Kerkhovenweg on the evening of 8 August.

What the main actors are doing

Reported positions, summarised — not direct quotations

Limburg prosecution and investigating authorities

The suspect was placed under an arrest warrant for murder, indicating that investigators considered an intentional killing to be a sufficiently serious working hypothesis. Prosecutors nevertheless say all possibilities remain under examination, so the classification is not a conclusion about guilt.

The suspect and his defence lawyer

The suspect denies intentionally striking Klein. His lawyer says he is emotionally affected and cooperating with the inquiry, while stressing that important circumstances remain unclear. This defence account must be tested against forensic findings and other evidence.
