The Brussels-West police zone announced on 3 September that its anti-banditry brigade had seized €1,003,980 and detained 133 people since the beginning of 2026 across Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, Jette, Ganshoren, Berchem-Sainte-Agathe and Koekelberg. According to figures communicated by the zone and reported by BX1 and La Dernière Heure, 112 of those detained were referred to the Brussels public prosecutor’s office and 35 were subsequently placed under arrest warrant.

For residents, commuters and international workers living in the capital, the figures offer a concrete measure of police activity beyond the highly visible shootings that have shaped discussion of security in Brussels. They do not, however, show by themselves whether the underlying criminal market is shrinking. An arrest is not a conviction, an arrest warrant is imposed by a judicial authority rather than the police, and the published total aggregates operations conducted over eight months rather than describing one raid.

The 27-member Brigade anti-banditisme, commonly abbreviated to BAB, said it had also recovered 28 kilograms of cannabis, 22.5 kilograms of cocaine and 920,000 counterfeit cigarettes. BX1 reported that the unit uses patrols and targeted controls against drug trafficking, carries out the initial investigative work following arrests and supports higher-risk missions alongside specialised federal units. The police statement did not provide a case-by-case breakdown, identify suspects or explain how much of the cash has already been linked evidentially to particular offences.

That distinction matters because seizure is an investigative measure, not a final finding that money represents criminal profit. Decisions on prosecution belong to the Brussels public prosecutor, while guilt and any definitive confiscation must be determined through the courts. Neither the prosecutor’s office nor the five municipal mayors was quoted in the initial reports with an assessment of how many files are expected to proceed to trial.

The BAB’s enforcement-led account presents the results as evidence of sustained pressure on trafficking networks: its stated focus is to “target drug trafficking” through proactive patrols and controls. A second Belgian institutional perspective is broader. The Federal Public Service Justice describes Belgium’s approach to problematic drug use as an “integrated policy,” under which magistrates can direct dependent users towards assistance at different stages of criminal proceedings. These positions are not necessarily contradictory. One focuses on sellers, illicit proceeds and operational capacity; the other recognises that policing alone does not address addiction or the demand sustaining the market.

Recent official operations show why coordination has become central to the Brussels response. The Federal Police said that all six Brussels police zones, the railway police, federal units, the Brussels prosecutor, STIB, Securail, the Immigration Office and Defence participated in a large control operation on 28 August. That separate action produced 41 judicial arrests, 19 administrative arrests and seizures including drugs, weapons, vehicles, cigarettes and €9,410 in cash. The results cannot be added directly to the BAB total without knowing whether any cases overlap.

The broader picture is of illicit markets that cross municipal and national boundaries while day-to-day policing remains divided among six local zones. Brussels is Belgium’s capital and the seat of major EU institutions, but this is primarily a city-security story: the institutions are relevant as employers and destinations whose staff use the same streets and transport network, not because EU bodies direct local policing. Organised cocaine supply is international, yet the published BAB figures contain no information about source countries, ports, cross-border partners or links to specific organisations.

The immediate achievement is substantial in cash and contraband terms, but the meaningful test will come later. Prosecutors and courts must establish which allegations are supported, while police and municipal authorities will need to show whether repeated interventions reduce violence and street dealing rather than displacing them into neighbouring districts. Future reporting should track charges, convictions, confiscation orders and neighbourhood-level crime indicators. Until those data appear, the €1 million figure is best read as a striking account of enforcement effort—and as evidence of the scale of the market confronting western Brussels—rather than proof that the problem has been resolved.
