The top-priced Casamigos Pommex Z is a black colt registered with the Belgian-based Zangersheide studbook. His pedigree combines Cornet Obolensky with the mare Jasmien van den Bisschop, a daughter of Larino. Crazy in Love Pommex Z combines Casallco with Jeunesse van ’t Paradijs, whose sire is the Belgian-bred Emerald van ’t Ruytershof. Those names are commercial signals in elite breeding: purchasers are paying for ancestry, conformation and projected potential long before competition results can exist.

The auction platform’s conditions show how firmly this spectacle is also a business transaction. Stephex Stables NV offered ten lots that it owned, permitted bidding in the arena and online, and required successful buyers to pay the hammer price plus any applicable VAT. Ownership transfers after payment. Worldwide streaming widened the bidder pool beyond those able to attend in Meise, helping turn a Flemish event into an international marketplace.

That commercial framing deserves some restraint. Stephex described the collection as representing exceptional genetics and the promise of future champions, language appropriate to a seller presenting carefully selected stock. A pedigree can support a valuation, however, but it cannot guarantee that a foal will remain healthy, develop the required temperament or reach five-star competition. The six-figure prices measure buyer demand at one curated auction, not proven sporting achievement or the condition of the entire horse market.

The municipality presents the Masters differently, emphasising accessible sport, entertainment and an experience for a broad public. That civic view sits alongside the auction’s exclusivity rather than directly opposing it: spectators can attend the wider event without belonging to the small international group capable of spending six figures on an unproven horse. World Sport Timing’s programme confirms that the sale was embedded in a five-day competition featuring CSI classes and the event’s top-level sporting programme.

There is no meaningful EU-institutional role here. Brussels functions as an international brand, not as shorthand for action by the European Commission, Council or Parliament. Belgium’s relevance instead comes from its breeding infrastructure, equestrian businesses and position as a meeting point for riders, owners and capital.

The next meaningful test will take years. Buyers must rear and train the foals before their athletic value can be assessed, and Stephex has not publicly disclosed their destinations or future programmes. For now, the verified outcome is narrower but still striking: two six-figure sales and an approximately €66,000 average placed a Belgian-hosted breeding auction firmly inside the global high-end show-jumping market.
