  • A bullet entered a first-floor bedroom at Cité Fontainas at about 7am; the sleeping occupant was not injured.
  • The incident followed shootings at an Anderlecht police station on Friday night and near Rue Gustave Defnet on Saturday.
  • BRUZZ reported that Saturday’s victim was not in a life-threatening condition.
  • Federal police figures cited by Het Nieuwsblad count 57 Brussels shootings in January-July 2026, with two deaths and 21 injuries.

A bullet entered the bedroom of a sleeping woman near Porte de Hal in the Brussels commune of Saint-Gilles at about 7am on Sunday, 23 August, but narrowly missed her and caused no reported injuries. Het Nieuwsblad reported that the shot was fired on Chaussée de Forest/Vorstse Steenweg and passed through a first-floor window at Cité Fontainas. The federal judicial police laboratory examined the room. No arrest had been announced when the initial report was published, and the precise sequence of events remains under investigation.

The incident was the third reported shooting in the Brussels-Capital Region over the weekend. On Friday night, unknown assailants fired at the Brussels-Midi/Zuid police station on Rue Démosthène/Demosthenesstraat in Anderlecht. Police confirmed to BRUZZ that several bullets struck the building, nobody was injured and a ballistics expert was appointed. The motive remains unknown. On Saturday evening, a man was shot near the junction of Rue Gustave Defnet/Gustave Defnetstraat and Chaussée de Forest. BRUZZ reported that he was not in a life-threatening condition and that Saint-Gilles mayor Jean Spinette considered a connection with the drug trade likely, although investigators had not yet established the circumstances publicly.

Het Nieuwsblad, citing Spinette, reported that Sunday’s shooter appeared to have been trying to drive a rival dealer away from the area around Square Jacques Franck/Jacques Francksquare. That account should be treated as an attributed preliminary assessment, not a judicial finding. The intended person was reportedly not hit. What is confirmed through the published account is the most troubling consequence for residents: a projectile left the street and entered an occupied home.

What residents should do

If you hear what may be gunfire, do not go to a window, balcony or doorway to investigate. Move to an interior part of the building if it is safe to do so, keep other occupants away from exposed windows and call 101 for urgent police assistance. Call 112 when someone is injured, there is a fire or several emergency services may be required. Belgium’s official 112 service says callers should give the exact commune or gemeente, street, number and nearest junction, explain what happened and say whether anybody is hurt. English can be used when a caller cannot communicate in Dutch or French.

The official 112 BE app offers another route to the emergency centres and can transmit the caller’s location. Its chat function may be activated when speaking or hearing is impossible. Residents can register the app in advance; it is designed for genuine emergencies rather than routine reports.

Do not touch a cartridge, projectile, damaged window frame or other possible evidence. Photographing damage may be useful only after police say the area is safe. For a non-urgent complaint or follow-up, the relevant force in Anderlecht, Forest/Vorst and Saint-Gilles is Police Zone Midi/Politiezone Zuid. Its official website says complaints at the Saint-Gilles and Forest stations are taken by appointment, while the central police headquarters at Rue des Deux Gares/Tweestationsstraat 50 in Anderlecht accepts visitors without an appointment. Current opening arrangements should be checked before travelling.

Brussels institutions operate bilingually, so the same places and services may appear under different names: Saint-Gilles is Sint-Gillis, Chaussée de Forest is Vorstse Steenweg, and Porte de Hal is Hallepoort. Police and emergency operators serve both official regional languages. For newcomers, giving the street name exactly as displayed on a sign or mapping application—and spelling it if necessary—can prevent confusion.

A persistent regional problem

The weekend cannot be understood as an isolated disturbance. Federal police figures reported by Het Nieuwsblad show 57 shootings across Brussels’ 19 communes during the first seven months of 2026, with two deaths and 21 injured people. The Federal Police’s 2025 annual report recorded 101 shootings in Brussels that year, irrespective of motive, and said it had intensified monitoring of drug-related gun violence. These datasets describe incidents using reporting and operational criteria; they do not establish that every shooting arose from the drug trade.

The geography nevertheless matters. The corridor around Porte de Hal, Jacques Francksquare and Brussels-Midi has repeatedly appeared in reporting on territorial disputes over street-level drug sales. In February 2024, a man was killed during a cluster of shootings around Jacques Francksquare. In June that year, two people died and three were injured outside a café in Saint-Gilles; VRT NWS reported that investigators suspected a drug-related settling of scores even though the victims appeared to have been ordinary customers. Such cases show how violence aimed at a particular person or location can expose neighbours, commuters and customers who have no connection to criminal networks.

Spinette argues that local officers are already making arrests, seizing drugs and displacing dealers but that Brussels needs a stronger federal judicial police capacity to investigate organised networks. He told Het Nieuwsblad that the Brussels federal judicial police was short of 80 staff and called for reinforcement comparable with Antwerp. That staffing figure is the mayor’s claim and has not been independently confirmed in the published official material reviewed for this article.

Others place more emphasis on police reorganisation and coordination. The federal government has promoted merging Brussels’ six police zones as a way to reduce fragmentation. Municipal leaders and local police representatives have countered in earlier debates that structural reform does not automatically supply investigators, prosecutors, prison capacity or sustained neighbourhood policing. The practical disagreement is therefore not whether the violence requires action, but whether the fastest gains come from consolidation, additional federal resources, locally targeted work or a combination of all three.

For people living near the affected streets, the immediate lesson is sober rather than alarmist: most residents will never encounter a shooting, but stray fire makes distance from a presumed target no guarantee of safety. The investigation must now determine who fired on Sunday, what weapon was used and whether any of the three weekend incidents are connected. Police and prosecutors have not publicly answered those questions. Until they do, claims about a single coordinated outbreak should be avoided.

Context & what happens next

What to do

During suspected gunfire, move away from windows and exterior walls, remain indoors if safe, and do not approach the scene. Call 101 for urgent police assistance or 112 when medical, fire or combined emergency help may be needed. Give the exact commune/gemeente, street, number and junction; English may be used if necessary. Preserve possible evidence and arrange non-urgent complaints through Police Zone Midi’s official website.

Impact

Regional — The incident directly affects Saint-Gilles and the wider Brussels-Midi area, where residents, traders and commuters share densely occupied streets with several locations repeatedly associated with drug dealing and gun violence. It also intensifies the regional debate over federal investigative staffing and the proposed merger of Brussels’ six police zones.
