Which roadworks will disrupt Mons-Borinage and the Centre after the summer break?

Wallonia’s infrastructure agency SOFICO has confirmed that several major roadworks around Mons-Borinage and the Centre will continue or enter a more disruptive phase as the new school and working season begins on Monday 24 August. The immediate pressure points are the E42-E19/A7 at Jemappes and Quaregnon, the N6 bridge at Nimy and the E42/A15 bridge at La Louvière, while another project on the N552 between Dour and Hensies will begin on 9 September.

For residents, commuters, schools and businesses, the timing matters as traffic returns to its normal weekday intensity. SOFICO says it schedules the most intrusive operations during quieter school holidays where possible, but 20 projects across Wallonia that began before the summer will remain active at the rentrée. The Walloon government’s traffic-information service advises drivers to consult SOFICO and Trafiroutes for live conditions because weather, administrative procedures and interaction with neighbouring works can still alter schedules.

The largest new operation in the Mons area is a €14 million project on the E42-E19/A7 at Jemappes and Quaregnon. According to SOFICO, preparatory work is ending and the main construction phase starts on 24 August. Crews will renew the motorway’s rainwater-management system and replace noise barriers, beginning at Quaregnon on the carriageway towards Mons and remaining there until October.

SOFICO says most work will take place between 20:30 and 05:00, when traffic will be reduced to one lane and limited to 70 km/h. Three lanes should remain open during the day, also under a reduced speed limit while roadside safety equipment is temporarily removed. The wider project is expected to proceed in phases through Jemappes and Quaregnon until June 2027, although the precise timetable remains dependent on site conditions.

The work has two constituencies in view. Motorists face slower journeys and repeated night-time restrictions, while people living beside the motorway stand to gain from improved drainage and more extensive, higher-performing acoustic screens. SOFICO presents that trade-off as necessary to preserve the network’s “safety, comfort and fluidity”; for households and road users, however, the practical test will be whether disruption is contained and the announced timetable holds.

Other bottlenecks will last longer. At Nimy, the N6 bridge rehabilitation that began in June leaves one lane available in each direction, with completion scheduled for spring 2027, SOFICO says. At La Louvière, reconstruction of the E42/A15 bridge continues with two lanes maintained each way on the deck normally used by Mons-bound traffic. Road operations there are expected to finish during November 2026.

From 9 September, the N552 between Dour and Hensies will also be resurfaced and reorganised. SOFICO says traffic will run on one lane in each direction until the end of September. Between the La Taule roundabout and the entrance to Dour, four lanes will give way to a 2-by-1 arrangement with marked turning lanes and space redistributed towards active travel. The La Taule roundabout will eventually close completely for several days, but the agency has not yet published the exact dates. The project carries a budget of €2.8 million excluding VAT.

These are not isolated repairs. A Walloon infrastructure plan described the west-Mons road system as strategically important for access between Mons, the Borinage, industrial areas and the French border, while identifying congestion around Nimy and the N552 as a structural problem capable of pushing traffic into residential streets. In May, Walloon Mobility Minister François Desquesnes also told parliament that a separate structural rehabilitation of the R5 between Mons, Jemappes and Asquillies remained a government priority and was intended to start in autumn 2026, subject to procurement procedures.

That possible R5 project is the next major uncertainty: adding it to the existing programme could intensify pressure on alternative routes unless the phases are carefully coordinated. In the short term, drivers should allow extra time, respect the temporary limits and check live information before travelling. The dates to watch are 24 August for the main Jemappes-Quaregnon phase, 9 September for the N552 works and the still-unannounced closure of the La Taule roundabout.
