Walloon authorities issued no systematic public alert on Sunday 16 August as smoke from the High Fens wildfire pushed particulate pollution to exceptional levels across parts of Wallonia. At 11:00 in Vielsalm, monitors recorded hourly peaks of 746 micrograms per cubic metre for PM10 and 652 for PM2.5, according to L’Echo, which described the readings as unprecedented in Belgium. The immediate pollution peak has passed. By 21 August, local outlet QU4TRE reported that the fire was controlled throughout the High Fens, although underground peat continued to generate flare-ups. ISSeP has deployed seven additional sensors around the affected area, while provincial authorities continue to direct residents to Wallonair for current readings.
