Driver escapes as car fire damages roadside café in Elverdinge

Updated 25 August 2026, 17:00 CEST — A driver escaped from a burning car on the N8 in Elverdinge, near Ypres, at about 06:30 on Thursday 9 July, before the vehicle was destroyed and heat damaged a nearby café. Regional broadcaster Focus and WTV reported that no injuries were recorded.

The driver noticed the fire while travelling on the busy regional road and stopped outside the café. Focus and WTV said he got out before the flames consumed the vehicle. The heat was intense enough to melt the café’s exterior shutters.

Westhoek fire crews attended the scene and stopped the fire from spreading further, according to Focus and WTV. Het Nieuwsblad and VRT NWS separately reported that the driver escaped unharmed and that the car burned out completely.
