For a Belgian audience, Odira’s arrival strengthens more than an isolated event on the programme. Brussels is hosting the season-ending Diamond League championships across 4 and 5 September, with the women’s 800 metres scheduled for 21:39 on Saturday. Because qualification points merely secure a place in the final, the decisive race in Brussels crowns the Diamond League champion. The city is therefore staging the conclusion of the international outdoor circuit, rather than a ceremonial appearance by famous athletes.

Odira earned that status dramatically at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo. World Athletics records that she swept past Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson and Georgia Hunter Bell in the closing metres, winning in a championship record of 1:54.62. All three finished below 1:55, something no previous women’s 800-metre race had produced. Odira’s performance cut almost two seconds from her previous best and broke the championships record set by Jarmila Kratochvílová in 1983.

Her route to Brussels has not been uniformly dominant. World Athletics reported that Ethiopia’s Nigist Getachew beat her at May’s Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi, where Odira finished second in 1:59.15. She then won Kenya’s national title in June in 2:00.44, securing selection for the Commonwealth Games, and the Memorial organisers say she also won this season’s Diamond League meeting in Eugene. That sequence makes her dangerous but not untouchable: her finishing speed is proven, while the shape and pace of Saturday’s one-off final remain open.

The Brussels organisers initially promoted the race as a reprise of the European Championship contest involving Werro, Broeders-Bol and Britain’s Hodgkinson, with Odira added as the world champion. Their own account highlighted Werro’s 1:53.80 in Paris on 28 June—the third-fastest women’s 800 metres ever—and Broeders-Bol’s rapid transition from the 400-metre hurdles. Later event previews did not list Hodgkinson among the principal starters, however, so her participation should not be treated as confirmed without the final start list. The core contest between Odira, Werro and Broeders-Bol remains compelling on verified form alone.

There is a distinctly Belgian layer without making the story parochial. Camille Laus has a national wildcard for the same 800-metre final, according to the organisers, while Nafi Thiam, Noor Vidts, Eliott Crestan, Ben Broeders and other Belgian athletes feature across the two-day programme. Belgian Athletics’ regional federation, Atletiek Vlaanderen, is also placing selected youth athletes in the supporting programme. The meeting thus combines a global championship field with a showcase for established and emerging Belgian competitors.

That balance fits the Memorial’s history. Created in 1977 in memory of Belgian middle-distance runner Ivo Van Damme, the competition reaches its 50th edition this year. Van Damme won Olympic silver over both 800 and 1,500 metres in Montreal in 1976 before dying later that year, giving Saturday’s two-lap final particular resonance at the meeting bearing his name.

The immediate questions will be settled on the track: who controls the opening lap, whether Odira can reproduce her Tokyo finish and whether Werro’s superior 2026 time translates into a championship victory. Spectators should also check the final entry list for withdrawals or late changes. What is certain is that Brussels will not merely welcome another world champion; it will decide which of the season’s leading 800-metre runners leaves Belgium with the Diamond League title.
